CSIR-CIMAP LUCKNOW AND NMPB SIGNED MOU TO PROMOTE THE PRODUCTION OF MEDICINAL PLANTS

Context:

On December 6, 2021, the National Board of Medicinal Plants (NMPB) and the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research-Central Institute of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants (CSIR-CIMAP), Lucknow, signed an MoU to extend joint efforts to promote the production of high-quality planting material (QPM) for medicinal plants.

Significance of the MoU:

  • The MoU will facilitate QPM development for medicinal plants and herbs identified by NMPB.
  • It will assist in establishing their QPM development facilities, promoting, conserving, and planting suitable medicinal plants in various agricultural climates.

Functions under the MoU:

  • CSIR-CIMAP Lucknow may also conduct repeated research on agro-technology development, mass multiplication, Quality Planting Material generation of selected medicinal plants and herbs.
  • During the implementation of the MoU, the NMPB will collaborate with its active agencies across India, including State Horticulture Departments, Medicinal Plant Boards, and Regional-cum-Facilitation Centres, in collaboration with CSIR-CIMAP Lucknow, to support QPM for Medicinal Plant Species development projects.

National Board of Medicinal Plants (NMPB):

  • It operates under the Ministry of Ayush.
  • NMPB is mandated to coordinate all aspects of medicinal plants and support Policies and Plans for the growth, export, conservation, and cultivation of medicinal plants.
