CSIR-CMERI develop new indigenous ventilator

Researchers working at the Central Mechanical Engineering Research Institute (CMERI) based in Durgapur have developed a ventilator indigenously amidst the increasing COVID-19 cases. The ventilator was inaugurated in the presence of Prof. (Dr) Harish Hirani, Director, CSIR-CMERI.

Key Points:

  • There have been many customizations in the design, embedded electronics and controllers of the ventilator that have ensured cost-effectiveness in addition to meeting the requirements of the relevant industries.
  • The cost of the ventilator is around Rs. 80,000-90,000. Many further upgrades will be made in the ventilator to meet the requirements of several other parameters of patient’s.
  • Multiple changes in the design and the technical aspect have been done after receiving critical feedback from the healthcare professionals of the Health World Hospital and Vivekananda Hospital, Durgapur.
  • The individual parts of the ventilator can be made by various industries, and the mass-development of this ventilator will provide assistance to a wide range of industries.
  • The significantly reduced cost of the ventilators will help the economically marginalized sections of the society the most as well as help further fortify the Government-aided healthcare schemes.
