CSIR IGIB and TATA Sons sign an MoU

The Institute of Genomics and Integrative Biology (IGIB), a constituent laboratory functioning under the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the TATA Sons for licensing of knowhow of FNCAS9 EDITOR LINKED UNIFORM DETECTION ASSAY (FELUDA) FOR RAPID DIAGNOSIS OF COVID-19.

Key Points:

  • The MoU includes knowledge transfer and turning the knowledge into a kit for the deployment of testing for COVID-19 as early as the end of May.
  • The indigenous scientific invention, FELUDA for COVID-19, has been designed for combating the COVID-19 pandemic that has gripped the nation and to address the issue of mass testing.
  • The main advantages of the MoU include affordability, ease of use, and non-dependency on expensive Q-PCR machines.
  • The Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats (CRISPR) ‘Feluda’ test utilizes the CRISPR technology to detect genomic sequences of the novel coronavirus.
  • The collaboration of CRISPR biology and paper-strip chemistry provides clear signal readout on a strip of paper, which can be evaluated rapidly to establish the existence of the infection in a specimen.
  • The collaborative effort of the CSIR with the industry will help in combating Covid-19 and the challenges arising out of it.
