CSIR-IIIM and RIL sign MoU to develop RT-LAMP based test for Coronavirus

The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) has strategized its Research and Development, for the development, integration, scale-up, and deployment of necessary technological interventions for combating pandemic the world is grappling with.

Key Points:

  • CSIR has formed five verticals to improve the coordination of the various research activities and these will be done under the guidance of Director-General, Dr Shekhar Mande.
  • The five verticals are
  1. Digital and Molecular Surveillance,
  2. Rapid and Economical Diagnostics,
  3. Drugs and Vaccines,
  4. Hospital Assistive Devices and PPEs, and
  5. Supply Chain and Logistics.
  • CSIR-IIIM, Jammu has collaborated with Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) to develop and scale-up a new Reverse Transcriptase-Loop Mediated Isothermal Amplification (RT-LAMP) based COVID-19 diagnostic kit.
  • The RT-LAMP test for COVID-19 is a test based on nucleic acid and is carried out from swab samples of the throat or nose from patients.
  • The test is a rapid (45-60 min), low cost and accurate test. The end detection of the test is a simple coloured reaction, visible in the Ultraviolet light easily, and is currently under modification to enable it to be detected under regular light.
  • The launch of the RT-LAMP test for COVID-19 will become fast, cost-effective, easy and accessible and will help in isolating the infected individuals and mitigating the spread of the virus.
