CYCLES4CHANGE CHALLENGE

Context:

On 18 January 2022, MoHUA organized an online event called “Cycles4Change challenge and Streets for People Challenge-Season 2”.

Key Points:

  • This event was organised by MoHUA, with technical assistance from the Institute for Transportation and Development Policy (ITDP India).
  • The ministry also introduced a book titled “Nurturing Neighborhoods Challenge: Stories from the Field” during the event.
  • The event was led by Manoj Joshi, secretary of MoHUA.
  • The event was attended by international and Indian officials from partner organizations, representatives of winning cities, officials from Central and Provincial Governments, and CEOs of 100 Smart Cities.

Cities - Winners:

  • MoHUA announced 11 winning cities for the Streets for People Challenge during the event.
  • 10 winning cities were announced for the Nurturing Neighborhoods Challenge.
  • These cities are about to step into the upstage of the challenge. Currently, it will sustainably expand the current projects.
  • Any city that is not already in the top 11 winners, any smart city, state capital / UT, or city with a population of more than 5 lakhs can work.

Under the pilot stage or stage 1 of India Cycles4Change & Streets4People Challenges:

  • Cities have converted 400+ km passages using temporary solutions to make cycling more friendly.
  • Received feedback from 60,000+ citizens through surveys
  • Received 600+ Civil Society Organizations to support their cities
  • More than 1800 design professionals, students, and other organizations came together to develop and explore creative solutions to rehabilitate human roads.
