Indian-American Manjit Singh appointed to the Advisory Council of the US President

  • Manjit Singh has been appointed to the US President's Advisory Council on Faith-based and Neighborhood partnerships.
  • He is an Indian-American Engineer.
  • He is the founder of Agilious, a software technology consulting firm where he works as the president.
  • He is a graduate of engineering from Bombay University. He is a post-graduate with Master of Science degree from the State University of New York in the US.
  • The Advisory Council on Faith-based and Neighborhood partnerships aims to bring leaders and experts together in fields related to the work of faith-based and neighborhood organizations.
  • The Council will also make recommendations to the Administration to improve the partnerships with the neighbours.

RBI issues new guidelines on branch offices by foreign entities

  • The Reserve Bank of India has issued new regulative norms for the approval of the foreign entities that plans to open his branch office or a liaison office or a project office in India.
  • As per the RBI norms, the entities from Pakistan, China, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, Iran. Macau and Hong Kong will require prior approval of the RBI to establish a branch office or project office in India.
  • Key Points:-
  • The RBI permission is also compulsory for opening offices in Jammu and Kashmir, North East region and Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
  • Non-Government Organization (NGO), a Non-Profit Organization or a Department of a foreign government has needed the prior approval of the RBI.
  • The approval is compulsory in case of the principal business of the applicant falls in defence, telecom, private security and information and broadcasting sectors.
  • If an NRI applicant has been awarded a contract by or entered into an agreement with Ministry of Defence or Service Headquarters or Defence Public Sector Undertakings then there is no separate approval is required to set up a Project Office in India.

Indian SC upholds constitutional validity of penal laws on defamation

  • The Indian Supreme Court’s two-judge bench of Justices Dipak Misra and Justice Prafulla C Pant has upheld constitutional validity of penal laws on defamation.
  • The bench said that the right to life under Article 21 includes the right to reputation.
  • The SC court was hearing the case based on the petitions filed by politicians and public figures.
  • They claim that the provisions of criminal sanction act as a censoring device, thus violating the freedom of speech guaranteed by the Constitution.
  • The central and some state governments have opposed it by an argument that acceding to them would lead to anarchy in society since people could malign others’ reputations with impunity.
  • The court directed magistrates across the country to observe extreme caution while issuing a summons in private defamation complaints.
  • Article 21:- It provides the Protection of life and personal liberty - No person shall be deprived of his life or personal liberty except according to procedure established by law

Parkash Singh Committee submitted its report on Jat Reservation Agitation

  • Parkash Singh committee constituted by the state government on the Jat Reservation Agitation has submitted its report the Haryana CM Shri Manohar Lal Khattar.
  • The committee was headed by former DGP of Uttar Pradesh retired IPS Officer Parkash Singh
  • It was constituted to inquire into the omission and commission on the part of all officers and officials of police and civil administration during Jat Reservation Agitation.
  • The Committee submitted its report in 2 volumes consists almost 450 pages.
  • The reports consist of the name of about 90 officers who have been found guilty in the Agitation in Haryana.

Anil Kumble re-appointed as the Chairman of ICC Cricket Committee

  • Anil Kumble has been re-appointed as the chairman of ICC Cricket Committee for the second time.
  • He is the former Indian Cricketer & Captain appointed for the duration of three years till 2018.
  • Earlier, He was first appointed in 2012.
  • Apart from this, former India captain Rahul Dravid has been appointed as the member of the ICC Cricket Committee.

New judges appointed to the Indian Supreme Court

  • The four new Judges has been appointed to the Indian Supreme Court
  • The four Judges are Justices A M Khanwilkar, D Y Chandrachud, Ashok Bhushan and L Nageshwar Rao.
  • Their oath was administered by Chief Justice of India T S Thakur.
  • Now, their strength goes to 29 as compared to the sanctioned strength of S C judges of 31, including the CJI.
  • Justices A M Khanwilkar, D Y Chandrachud and Ashok Bhushan were the Chief Justices of Madhya Pradesh High Court, Allahabad High Court and Kerala High Court, respectively.
  • Whereas Justice L Nageshwar Rao was a senior advocate and former Additional Solicitor General.
  • They will continue to be the Judges of Supreme Court until he attains the age of 65 or giving his resignation to the president.

Rajya Sabha MP Pranav Pandya resigns

  • Pranav Pandya has resigned from the Upper House of the Parliament.  He is a newly nominated member of the Rajya Sabha.
  • The Vice President Mohammed Hamid Ansari has made the announcement in the Rajya Sabha. He has accepted the resignation of Dr. Pranav Pandya.
  • Dr. Pranav Pandya is the director of All World Gayatri Pariwar
  • He was born on 8th of November 1950 in Mumbai.
  • He is an MBBS from MGM Medical College, Indore in the year 1972.  He has completed Doctor of Medicine in December 1975 and obtained a gold medal.
