Atulesh Jindal to take over as new CBDT chairman

  • Senior Indian Revenue Service officer Atulesh Jindal will take charge as the new chairman of the CBDT, the controlling body of the Income Tax department.
  • He will succeed incumbent A K Jain who completes his term.
  • The appointments committee of the cabinet headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi had approved the appointment of Jindal as the next Chairman of the Central Board of Direct Taxes on January 22.
  • Jindal is a 1978 batch IRS officer, is currently working as Member (Income Tax) in the CBDT.
  • He will have the tenure of six months until July.
  • Apart from its Chairman, CBDT has six members and is the supreme body for framing policy matters related to direct taxes in the country.

Kadambi Shrikanth wins Men's Singles title at Syed Modi International Grand Prix Gold Badminton Championship

  • K. Srikanth has won the Men's Singles title of the Syed Modi International Grand Prix Gold Badminton Championships.
  • Shrikanth has defeated China's Huang Yuxiang by 21-13, 14-21, 21-14 to win his fifth title overall at Lucknow.
  • The Women's Singles trophy was bagged by the second seeded Korean, Sung Ji Hyun. She beat the fifth-placed Japanese Sayako Sato by 12-21, 21-18, 21-18.

Novak Djokovic wins Australian Open Men's Singles Title

  • World Number One Novak Djokovic has won the Australian Open Men's Singles Title again.
  • He has defeated Andy Murray of Britain in straight sets by 6-1, 7-5, 7-6 at Melbourne  
  • Djokovic also equaled the record of Roy Emerson's record of six Australian Open Singles titles.
  • The defending champion also kept his unique record against Murray in the Australian Open Final, by beating the Briton for the fourth time in Men's Singles at the year's first Grand Slam championships. Murray succumbed to his fifth loss in five Australian Open finals.
  • Djokovic claimed his 11th grand slam title to match the totals of Rod Laver and Bjorn Borg.

Virat Kohli has become no 1 batsman in T20 rankings

  • Virat Kohli was rewarded for his stupendous performance in India’s clean sweep against Australia in the T20 internationals.
  • He replaced Aaron Finch as the top-ranked batsman in the ICC list for the shortest format.
  • According to the ICC latest list, Kohli who had scores of 90 not out, 59 not out and 50 in the three-match series, gained 47 rating points to move ahead of Finch with 892 ranking points to his credit.
  • Finch gained 14 points himself thanks to scores of 44 and 74 in Adelaide and Melbourne but his hamstring injury in game two ruled him out of the final match of the series at the SCG.

Assam government proposes 50 percent reservation for women in Government jobs

  • Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi has tabled interim budget of over 33 thousand 687 crore rupees for the first six months of the next financial year.
  • The government has also announced the reservation of women in government job will be increased to 50 percent.
  • The interim budget proposed 1 thousand crore rupees package for the upliftment of tribal communities, people living in char areas and other backward communities.
  • Another 1000 crore rupees have been earmarked under Assam Vikash Yojna for economic empowerment of BPL families.
  • Assam Silk Outreach Mission will be taken up at the cost of 2400 crore rupees.
  •  The Chief Minister also proposed to launch a new smart village program. The budget also proposed to set up a youth council for the holistic development of youths of the state.

Dr APJ Abdul Kalam's book 'Transcendence' launched in Johannesburg

  • Former President APJ Abdul Kalam's book "Transcendence" was launched in Johannesburg, South Africa.
  • The book was launched with religious leaders, politicians, diplomats and businessmen from all communities sharing the lessons from the book based on his spiritual experiences with Pramukh Swami Maharaj.
  • The book in which Kalam details his experiences with Pramukh Swami Maharaj, leader of the global Bochasanwasi Shri Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha (BAPS) was lauded by speakers who said they had benefited from the advice and wisdom of both the leaders.
  • Dr Kalam was inspired by the spiritual messages and saintly life of Pramukh Swami Maharaj.
