GANDHI-KING INITIATIVE PASSED BY U.S. HOUSE COMMITTEE

The Gandhi-king Initiative was passed by an important committee in the U.S. House of Representatives. It was authored by American civil rights leader and lawmaker John Lewis. The bill seeks to establish an exchange program to study the work and legacies of Mahatma Gandhi and civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. A United States-India Gandhi-King Development Foundation tasked to administer the grants of NGOs that work in health, pollution and climate change, education and empowerment of women.

UNICEF REPORT ON LEAD POISONING

As per the recent study, around 1 in 3 children which is up to 800 million globally has blood lead levels at or above 5 micrograms per decilitre (µg/dL). As per the joint report by UNICEF and Pure Earth,

Lead is a potent neurotoxin that causes irreparable harm to children’s brains. It is particularly destructive to babies and children under the age of 5.

15TH FINANCE COMMISSION’S HLEG ON AGRICULTURAL EXPORTS SUBMITS REPORT

High Level Group (HLEG) on Agricultural Exports has submitted its report to the 15th Commission. Recently, the High Level Group (HLEG) on Agricultural Exports set up by the Fifteenth Finance Commission to recommend measurable performance incentives for States to encourage agricultural exports and to promote crops to enable high import substitution, has submitted its report to the Commission.

HLEG Recommendations:

  • Focus on 22 crop value chains – demand driven approach.
  • Solve Value Chain Clusters (VCC) holistically with focus on value   addition.
  • Create a State led export plan with participation from stakeholders.
  • Private Sector should play an anchor role.
  • Centre should be an enabler.
  • Robust institutional mechanism to fund and support implementation.

SEROLOGY SURVEY OF COVID-19

Recently Serological Surveys were conducted in Delhi and Mumbai. It is conducted to assess the prevalence of a disease in a population. It is done by detecting the presence of specific antibodies that are produced against the virus.

It estimates the proportion of the population exposed to SARS-CoV-2 infection. Mumbai Study shows that out of three in five, or 57% tested in Mumbai slums were exposed to the virus and had developed antibodies against it, compared to 16% of those tested in residential societies of Mumbai. Delhi’s seroprevalence study has shown that nearly a quarter of the 21,000-odd samples tested had been exposed to the virus.

GREEN-AG PROJECT

The Centre has launched the Green-Ag Project in Mizoram to reduce emissions from agriculture and ensure sustainable agricultural practices. It is to reduce emissions from agriculture and ensure sustainable agricultural practices. It is designed to achieve multiple global environmental benefits in at least 1.8 million hectares (ha) of land in five landscapes, with mixed land-use systems.

The project has been launched in high-conservation-value landscapes of five States namely: Madhya Pradesh Odisha Uttarakhand Mizoram and Rajasthan.

UNITED NATIONS: NITROGEN DIOXIDE LEVELS FELL BY 70% IN DELHI

The United Nations reported that the nitrogen dioxide levels in New Delhi have fallen by more than 70% during the lockdown. 

The nitrogen dioxide reduces the air quality and  It depletes the ozone layer (the stratospheric ozone) by combining with ammonia via particulate matter. It also increases human health risks like cancer and other respiratory diseases. It can get converted into nitric acid and causes acid rain.
