China Imposes New Security Law on Hong Kong

A new security law has been passed by China for Hong Kong that came into effect from 1 July 2020. Under the law subversion, terrorism, secession and collusion with foreign powers is criminalized. The key provisions of the new law include the establishment of a new security office by Beijing in Hong Kong. Subversion, terrorism, secession and collusion with foreign powers have been made punishable by a maximum sentence of life imprisonment.

Kerala Government announces "Dream Kerala project" for rehabilitating Keralites

"Dream Kerala project" has been announced by the Kerala government with the aim of rehabilitating Keralites returning to India from foreign countries which will help in the comprehensive development of the state. The state has launched the initiative with the objective of reviving the economy of the state in addition to the rehabilitation of its returnees.

Col. Bharat Pannu secures podium place in Virtual Race Across America

The serving Indian Army Officer Lt. Col. Bharat Pannu created history on 28 June 2020 after successfully securing the podium place at the first edition of the Virtual Race Across America (VRAAM) 2020. Lt. Col. Pannu came at the third position on the leaderboard with a total covered distance of 4086 km in 12 days and gained a total cumulative elevation of 71,000 meters. Lt. Col. Bharat Pannu has become the first Indian in history to win the podium place at an International Ultracycling Race.

Bangladesh ends Quota system in Bangladesh Civil Services

The Government of Bangladesh has ended the quota system in the recruitment for jobs in Class-I, and Class-II category exams for the Bangladesh Civil Services (BCS) as the results of the 38th BCS exams were announced on 29 June 2020. The government has quashed all the quotas except for the disabled people and for jobs in the Class-III and Class-IV category in the government.

Special Liquidity Scheme of 30 thousand crore rupees launched by the government

In an effort to enhance the liquidity position of Housing Finance Companies and Non-Banking Finance Companies-NBFC, a Special Liquidity Scheme amounting to 30 thousand crore rupees has been launched by the central government of India. The HFCs and NBFCs will use the finances to repay the present liabilities only and not to expand their assets.

The government launched the scheme via a Special Purpose Vehicle in the form of SLS Trust, which has been established by the SBI Capital Market limited (SBICAP). 

Details of the second phase of PMGKAY released by Ram Vilas Paswan

The details of the second phase of the Pradhan Mantri Gareeb Kalyan Ann Yojana (PMGKAY) was rolled out by Ram Vilas Paswan, the Union Minister for Food and Public Distribution on 1 July 2020. The government will provide 5 kilograms of Rice or Wheat to each member of the family and 1 kilogram of Chana to every beneficiary family free of cost for the next 5 months, which will aid around 80 crore individuals in India.

Interministerial Scheme ‘Accelerate Vigyan’ launched by SERB

The Science and Engineering Research Board (SERB) functioning under the Department of Science and Technology has launched the Inter-Ministerial Scheme ‘Accelerate Vigyan’ (AV) on 1 July 2020. Under the scheme, a single platform will be provided for capacity building programs, research internships and workshops throughout the country. Applications for the Winter Season have already been called under its ‘ABHYAAS’ component.

Union Ministers Dr Harsh Vardhan and Ramesh Pokhriyal jointly launch Drug Discovery Hackathon

The Union Minister of Human Resources Development, Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank and Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare, Dr Harsh Vardhan jointly launched the Drug Discovery Hackathon via video conferencing on 2 July 2020. The Hackathon is a joint initiative by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). The academicians, professionals, researchers and students, were called upon by the minister to participate in the Hackathon and work for the development of drugs to combat the COVID-19 pandemic.

Carnegie Corporation of New York honours two renowned Indian-Americans

The Carnegie Corporation of New York has named Professor of Economics at Harvard University Raj Chetty and Pulitzer Prize-winning author and oncologist Siddhartha Mukherjee as '2020 Great Immigrants' honorees on 1 July 2020. The two renowned Indian Americans have been awarded the honour for their contribution in mitigating the health crisis caused due to COVID-19.
