World Press Freedom Day: May 3

World Press Freedom Day is celebrated on May 3 each year.

The day was proclaimed as such by the UN General Assembly in 1993 acting on a recommendation from UNESCO.

The day is used to “celebrate the fundamental principles of press freedom; assess the state of press freedom throughout the world; defend the media from attacks on their independence, and pay tribute to journalists who have lost their lives in the line of duty.”

Centre mandated all Electric Vehicles (EVs) to use the green number plates

The Central government has asked the state transport departments to make it mandatory for all Electric Vehicles (EVs) to use the green number plates, irrespective of the year in which they were bought. 

According to the announcement, all EVs should use green number plates wherein the private electric vehicles will get white lettering on a green background and commercial EVs will get yellow lettering. 

UK Parliament becomes the first national government to pass an Environment and Climate Emergency

The UK parliament has become the first in the world to pass a motion declaring an "environment and climate emergency", as pressure on the government to adopt a net zero emission targets as soon as possible continued to intensify.

The declaration was preceded by a visit by teenage activist Greta Thunberg (to the Parliament) , the feature of David Attenborough’s documentary movie titled ‘Climate Change: The Facts’ and the 11-days of constant protest by an environmental group ‘Extinction Rebellion‘.

International Religious Freedom 2019 report

The United States Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) has released its International Religious Freedom 2019 report.

US Commission on International Religious Freedom is a bipartisan, independent federal government commission, created by International Religious Freedom Act of 1998.

In its Annual Report, USCIRF unflinchingly describes threats to religious freedom around the world and recommends to the State Department countries for designation as “countries of particular concern” (CPCs) for engaging in or tolerating “systematic, ongoing, egregious violations.”

GK of the day: How cyclones are named?

Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and other states with their coastlines hugging the Bay of Bengal are bracing up for Cyclone Fani to make a landfall.

Cyclone Fani (pronounced as Foni) is gaining strength over southeast Bay of Bengal and will soon develop into an "extremely severe cyclonic" storm.

The name for this cyclone was suggested by Bangladesh.

The World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) has devised a mechanism where countries submit a list of names from time to time. Names of cyclones are chosen from this pool.
