New IT initiatives called ICEDASH and Atithi

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on 4th November 2019 unveiled two new IT initiatives, Atithi and ICEDASH, to improve monitoring and pace of customs clearance of imported goods. Both the initiatives ICEDASH and ATITHI are expected to reduce interface and increase the transparency of Customs functioning. 

World Tsunami Awareness Day

Every year, November 5th is observed as the World Tsunami Day which is marked by the United Nations (UN). The UN-designated this day in the year 2015. This day will promote Target of the Sendai Seven Campaign that focuses on reducing disaster damage to critical infrastructure and disruption of basic services.

JCB Prize for Literature for 2019

The JCB Prize for Literature 2019 has been bagged by Madhuri Vijay for her debut novel, The Far Field. Sir Mark Tully announced the winner in a live broadcast on social media. She has been selected from a shortlist featuring novels from five accomplished writers. Vijay is also a recipient of Henfield Prize and the Pushcart Prize.

Researchers at IIT Kharagpur generated electricity from wet clothes

The researchers from IIT Kharagpur have found an efficient solution to India's power woes. They have generated electricity from wet clothes drying in 'dhobi ghat'. In this process, the researchers were able to reliably charge up to around 10 volts in almost 24 hours. This stored energy is enough to glow a white LED for more than 1 hour.

The Union government released the political maps of newly formed Union Territories of J&K and Ladakh

The Union government released the political maps of the newly formed Union Territories (UTs) of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh as well as the map of India which depicts these new UTs. This development was made as the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir was reorganised as the new UTs of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh on 31 October 2019, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The Kargil district was carved out from the area of Leh and Ladakh district. The newly created map now depicts UT of J&K as comprising 22 districts.

CARAT- 2019

The biggest US- Bangladesh Navy exercise ‘Cooperation Afloat Readiness and Training (CARAT) – 2019’ is being held in Chattogram (Chittagong City) in Bangladesh. The CARAT is a yearly exercise that is conducted between the navies of Bangladesh and United States in the Bay of Bengal.
