SRI LANKAN ECONOMIC CRISIS- EXPLAINED

Recently, the President of Sri Lanka Gotabaya Rajapaksa had declared an economic emergency, due to rapidly depleting forex reserves, depreciating currency, and rising food prices in the country. The emergency was declared under the Public Security Ordinance to prevent the hoarding of essential items, including sugar and rice.

4TH ROUND OF THE ‘INDO-DANISH JOINT COMMISSION MEETING (JCM)’

The Minister of Foreign Affairs (EAM), S. Jaishankar, has co-chaired the joint session of the 4th round of the ‘Indo-Danish Joint Commission Meeting (JCM)’ with his Danish counterpart Jeppe Kofod in Copenhagen on September 5, 2021.

JAMMU HAS GOT X-BAND DOPPLER WEATHER RADAR

According to the Indian Meteorological Department, an X-band doppler weather radar has been installed here to provide advanced weather services to the people of Jammu and Kashmir. Union minister Jitendra Singh will dedicate the radar along with an indigenous GPS based pilot-sonde to the public at the meteorological office in Jammu.

WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION - SOUTH-EAST ASIA REGIONAL OFFICE (WHO-SEARO)

On 07 September 2021, Dr Bharati Pravin Pawar, Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare represented India at the World Health Organization- South-East Asia Regional Office (WHO-SEARO) with a video conference. She offered intervention on behalf of India at the Ministerial Conference of the Seventy-fourth Session of the WHO Regional Committee, for South-East Asia.

4TH EDITION OF AUSINDEX HAS BEGUN

The 4th edition of AUSINDEX, a bilateral naval exercise between the Indian Navy and the Royal Australian Navy has begun. Naval exercise ‘AUSINDEX’ is a bilateral maritime exercise between India and Australia. It started on September 06, 2021, and will continue up to September 10, 2021.

ARMY SEIZED POWER IN GUINEA

Guinean special forces seized power in a coup, arresting the president and imposing an indefinite curfew in Guinea.

According to an officer, Guinea's land and air borders had been shut and the government dissolved. Lieutenant-Colonel Mamady Doumbouya, the head of Guinea's military special forces, appeared on public television, draped in the national flag, saying government "mismanagement" prompted the coup.

Guinea is a country in West Africa, bordered on the west by the Atlantic Ocean.

PUBLIC WELFARE PROJECTS UNDER VATAN PREM YOJANA ANNOUNCED

On September 4, 2021, in a meeting, the Government of Gujarat announced that it plans on undertaking public welfare projects worth Rs. 1,000 crores jointly with non-resident Gujaratis by December 2022. The projects will be under the state government’s ‘Vatan Prem Yojana’.

Vatan prem Yojana is a repackaged version of the Madar-e-Vatan scheme by the Gujarat government. Under this scheme earlier, the contribution of the state government and NRIs was 50:50. Now, it has been changed to 60:40.

PRESIDENT’S COLOUR PRESENTED TO NAVAL AVIATION AT INS HANSA

On 06 Sep 2021, Shri Ram Nath Kovind, Honorable President of India, presented the President’s Colour to Indian Naval Aviation at INS Hansa, Goa. The Award of the President’s Color to Indian Naval Aviation is a tribute to the yeoman service offered during the time of peace and war.
