WORLD FOOD PRICE INDEX: FAO

The Food and Agriculture Organization's World Food Price Index rose in December 2020 for the seventh month in a row. The index averaged 107.5 points in December in comparison to 105.2 in November.

INDIA TO CHAIR THREE-KEY SUBSIDIARY BODIES OF UNSC

India will be chairing three-key subsidiary bodies of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). It includes the Counter-Terrorism Committee (for 2022), Taliban Sanctions Committee, and Libya Sanctions committee.

EXPLAINED: LONGITUDINAL AGEING STUDY OF INDIA

The Ministry of Health & Family Welfare released the Longitudinal Ageing Study of India (LASI) Wave-1 Report on the virtual platform. In the 2011 census, the 60+ population accounted for 8.6% of India’s population, accounting for 103 million elderly people. The number of elderly people will rise to 319 million in 2050, by growing at around 3% annually.

16TH PRAVASI BHARATIYA DIVAS

16th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas will be organized on 9th January 2021. It is celebrated for the people and by the people who have left the country for one reason or the other. This year Pravasi Bharatiya Divas theme in 2021 is “Contributing to Aatmanirbhar Bharat".

EXPLAINED: SUDDEN STRATOSPHERIC WARMING

Sudden stratospheric warming (SSW) event took place on January 5, 2021. The term sudden stratospheric warming refers to what is observed in the stratosphere:- rapid warming (up to about 50 ­°C in just a couple of days), between 10 km and 50 km above the earth’s surface. This is so high up that we don’t feel the ‘warming’ ourselves.
