Ganga has become one of the 10 cleanest rivers in the world

Ganga had become one of 10 cleanest rivers in the world in the major rivers category. This announcement was made by the Jalshakti Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat at the 4th India Water Impact Summit, 2019 in New Delhi. India has only 4% of the world's potable water while 18% of the world's human and equivalent livestock population is present.

Global Climate Risk Index

The Global Climate Risk Index is based on an analysis of intercontinental data on extreme weather conditions and events. India’s rank has significantly worsened from the 14th to the 5th in the Global climate risk index making it one of the most vulnerable countries to the impacts of climate changes.

The diabetic population is close to 69.9 million by 2025 in India

Ministry of Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, Sowa Rigpa and Homoeopathy -AYUSH has reported that the diabetic population in India is close to hitting 69.9 million by the year 2025. It is expected to witness an increase of 266%.

Human Rights Day

Human Rights Day is celebrated annually on 10th December to recognise and empower human rights. It mainly includes economic, social, cultural rights and international commitments on civil and political rights.

The theme for the year 2019 is – ‘Youth Standing Up for Human Rights’.

Duchifat 3

Three youngsters from an Israeli school are to travel to India to launch a satellite — Duchifat 3 that is designed and built by them aboard PSLV C48 from ISRO’s Sriharikota launch site. This was jointly built by Herzliya Science Center and Sha’ar HaNegev High School students. The satellite is designed to help children “observe the Earth”. Duchifat 3 is the third in the series of the Israeli student-made satellites.

Karnataka conducted a Human Library event in Mysore

A human library is a concept which seeks to replace books with humans, was organised in Mysuru on December 8. The human library is aiming to break the past long-standing prejudices and stereotypes by creating a safe framework for conservations by using a library analogy of lending people rather than books.

Human Development Index

India climbed one spot to 129 among 189 countries in the 2019 Human Development Index (HDI), according to a report by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). In India, 27.1 crore people were lifted out of poverty from 2005-06 to 2015-16.

The Constitution-126th amendment bill, 2019 was introduced in Lok Sabha on December 9, 2019

The bill seeks to extend by ten years the reservation given to Scheduled Castes (SC), and Scheduled Tribes (ST) in Lok Sabha and State assemblies. This was introduced in Lok Sabha on 9th December 2019. 

A-334 lays down that the provisions for reservation of seats and special representation of Anglo-Indians, SC and ST will cease after 40 years. The clause was included in the year 1949. After 40 years, it is being amended with an extension of 10 years.
