IUCN added around 1,840 new species to its updated Red List of Threatened Species

The International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has added 1,840 new species to its catalogue of plants and animals that risk extinction. The list now contains more than 30,000 species that are under threat of disappearing. Climate change is adding to the multiple threats’ species face.

Anti-Maritime Bill

The Anti-Maritime Piracy Bill 2019 aims to promote the safety and security of India’s maritime trade, and the safety of its crew members. Section three of the bill says that-whoever commits any act of piracy, shall be punished with imprisonment for life; or with death if such person in committing the act of piracy causes death or an attempt thereof.

International Mountain Day

Every year International Mountain Day is observed on December 11 since 2003. 

As per the United Nations, mountains are home to 15% of the world's population and a quarter of the world's animals and plants.

The theme for the year is 'Mountains Matter for Youth'.

Russia with a four-year ban from international sports events

The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) has banned Russia for four years from major global sporting events which includes the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar over manipulated doping data.

The Climate Change Performance Index

India, for the first time, ranks among the top 10 in this year's Climate Change Performance Index (CCPI) presented on 10TH December 2019 at the COP25 climate summit. The current levels of per capita emissions and energy use in India has ranked 9th in the "high category", are still comparatively low and, along with ambitious 2030 targets. They are yet resulting in high ratings for the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and energy use categories.

Iron Union 12

'Iron Union 12', is a joint military exercise between the ground forces of the UAE and the United States, commenced. 'Iron Union 12' exercise will see the two sides take part in joint military cooperation to enhance combat and tactical capabilities.

World’s First Electronic Flight

The first fully electronic flight in the world completed its test flight successfully on December 10th 2019. This flight would operate from Vancouver, Canada to the nearby islands. This zero-emission electronic flight proved that all-electric commercial aviation is possible. 

India Skills Report

About 46.21% of students were found employable or ready to take up jobs in the year 2019, compared with 33% in 2014, and 47.38% in 2018, according to the India Skills Report 2019-20. Female employability has seen an upward trend at 47% this year from 38% in 2017 and 46% in 2018.
