Union Minister released National Diabetes and Diabetic Retinopathy survey, 2019

The Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare, Harsha Vardhan released National Diabetes and Diabetic Retinopathy survey, 2019 on October 10th 2019. This survey was conducted between 2015 and 2019. Diabetes and Diabetic retinopathy have been found as non – communicable diseases that lead to ocular morbidity. 1 in 46 diabetic patients in India is visually impaired due to diabetes.

 

UN Financial Crisis

The United Nations(UN) is facing its “worst cash crisis” for nearly a decade because almost one-third of its member states have not paid their annual dues, this was announced by the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on 9th Oct in UN fifth Committee Meeting. The regular budget for the UN for a year is 5.4 billion USD. This is separate from the peacekeeping budget of 6.3 billion USD.

India to set up solar and wind projects along the border of Indo- Pak

By 2022 India has a target of 175 GW of clean energy. In order to achieve this, India plans to set up solar and wind projects on fallow lands along the international border with Pakistan. A 30 km by 20 km wide land is identified along the border in Kutch district of Gujarat to implement the project. This land allocated is fallow, and will help to tackle the problem of agricultural land being diverted for such projects. 

UNICEF has become the 1st UN organization to hold and make transactions in cryptocurrency

The United Nations Organisations, United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF) will now be able to receive, hold and disburse donations of cryptocurrencies ether and bitcoin, through its newly-established UNICEF Cryptocurrency Fund. For the first time, the UNICEF will use cryptocurrencies to fund open source technology benefitting children and young people around the world. 

International day of Girl Child

Since 2012, October 11th has been marked as the International Day of Girl Child. This day aims to highlight and address the needs and challenges girls face. It promotes girls' empowerment and the fulfilment of their human rights. The theme for the year 2019 is “GirlForce: Unscripted and unstoppable”.

The Govt Of India to set up a National Coordination Centre (NCC)

The Government of India is planning to create a National Coordination Centre (NCC). This would function as a databank on Maoists' core strongholds and cadres, and as a synergy point for intelligence gathering and anti-Maoist operations.

Draft Arms (Amendment) Bill

On 10th October 2019, the Union Home Ministry proposed an amendment to convict makers and users of illegal arms. According to this amendment, the makers of “prohibited” arms and those carrying such arms have to spend the remaining life in prison if convicted. In this case, any person possessing more than 2 licensed guns should deposit the third one with the authorities.

The fourth-largest Private Sector Bank in India, Yes Bank announces the appointment of Anita Pai as Chief Operating Officer(CEO) and Jasneet Bachal as Chief Marketing Officer (CMO) on 10th October 2019.

Saudi Arabia announced to allow women to serve in armed forces

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia embarks on a broad programme of economic and social reforms, the country announced that it will allow women in the kingdom to serve in armed forces. This move is the latest in a series of measures aimed by the country towards women empowerment and increasing the rights of women in the kingdom, even as rights groups accuse Saudi Arabia of cracking down on women activists.
