World Youth Skills Day observed on 15 July

The World Youth Skills Day is observed on 15 July every year. The day was designated by the United Nations in December 2014, with the aim of achieving better social and economic conditions for the youth through the resolution of challenges of underemployment and unemployment. The theme for World Youth Skills Day 2020 is “Skills for a Resilient Youth”.

Bastille Day observed in France on 14 July

Bastille Day is the National Day of France observed on 14 July every year to mark the storming of the Bastille Prison on 14 July 1789, which signifies the start of the French Revolution in the true sense. The day is observed by the former French colonies, its overseas territories and the territories associated with France. Bastille Day 2020 saw the french territories pay tribute to the front line health workers who died fighting the pandemic and those who are working for the masses. 

Cost-effective supercapacitor developed from industrial waste cotton & natural seawater electrolyte

A simple, environmentally friendly, low-cost, and sustainable supercapacitor electrode has been developed by the researchers working at the International Advanced Research Centre for Powder Metallurgy and New Materials (ARCI), an autonomous organisation functioning under the Department of Science and Technology, from industrial waste cotton that can be utilised as an energy harvester storage device. The researchers have explored the natural seawater as an alternative aqueous electrolyte for the first time as it is cost-effective, environmentally friendly and scalable.

UV sanitizing device 'SHUDDH' developed by IIT Kanpur

The Imagineering Laboratory Department of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur has developed the Smartphone operated Handy Ultraviolet Disinfection Helper (SHUDH), which is an Ultraviolet (UV) sanitizing product. The device can be used to disinfect a 10x10 square feet room in about 15 minutes at its full operation.

Rs.5,000-crore scheme launched by NABARD for the computerisation of PACS

A grant of Rs.5,000 crore has been announced by the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) on 13 July 2020 for the computerisation of 35,000 Primary Agricultural Credit Societies (PACS) by the Fiscal year 2023. The central government will disburse the grant to the state government who will have to release a matching grant for the PACS.

PRAGYATA Guidelines on Digital Education released virtually

The Minister of Human Resource Development, Shri Ramesh Pokhriyal 'Nishank' released the PRAGYATA Guidelines on Digital Education virtually on 14 July 2020 in New Delhi that includes eight steps of online learning.

The PRAGYATA guidelines have been developed from the point of view of learners and emphasise on digital education for the students taking classes from home on account of the lockdown. The guidelines offer a roadmap for improving the quality of education for online education.

Demo Days Initiative by Atal Innovation Mission for supporting Startups

Atal Innovation Mission, (AIM), the flagship initiative of National Institution for Transforming India (NITI) Aayog has concluded a series of virtual COVID-19 Demo-Days, that was started for the identification of potential start-ups concerning Covid-19 innovations. Under the initiative, the NITI Aayog will help the start-ups to deploy their solutions further and scale-up at the national level.

Study led by Clemson University suggests more extreme wet and dry seasons due to Climate change

The report published in the journal ‘Nature Communications’ and led by Clemson University, states that there will be an increase in the amount of rainfall and amount of evaporation with the changing seasons as the Climate change advances further. According to the report, the variation in seasonal rainfall and evaporation will also complicate efforts of managing reservoirs and crop irrigation. Regions like Bangladesh, India, Brazil, Myanmar, Africa and northern Australia will be significantly affected.

India’s first trans-shipment hub - Vallarpadam Terminal in Kerala

The review of the developmental activities of Vallarpadam Terminal of Cochin Port, Kerala was undertaken by the Minister of State for Shipping (Independent Charge) Shri Mansukh Mandaviya.

The Vallarpadam Terminal of Cochin Port has been proposed to be the first trans-shipment port of India, managed by DP World (Dubai Ports World). The Kochi International Container Trans-shipment Terminal (ICTT), also called as the Vallarpadam Terminal locally is strategically located on the coastline of India and fulfils all the criteria required for its development as a trans-shipment hub.
