INDIA BEATS CHINA TO BECOME MEMBER OF UN'S COMMISSION ON STATUS OF WOMEN

India elected as the member of the Commission on Status of Women (CSW), a body of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). India will be a member of the prestigious body for four years from 2021 to 2025.

ODISHA GOVT LAUNCHES ‘GARIMA’ SCHEME FOR SANITATION WORKERS

The Odisha government launched a welfare scheme for sanitation workers to ensure their safety and dignity. It aims to identify the registration of core sanitation workers and ensures provision of necessary machines and appropriate PPEs (personal protection equipment) for  safe working conditions.

SHRI HARIVANSH NARAYAN SINGH ELECTED AS DEPUTY CHAIRMAN OF RAJYA SABHA

He is elected by the Rajya Sabha itself from amongst its members. Whenever the office of the Deputy Chairman falls vacant, the Rajya Sabha elects another member to fill the vacancy.

EXPLAINED : SINGAPORE CONVENTION ON MEDIATION

The Singapore Convention on Mediation came into force recently which will provide a more effective way to enforce mediated settlements of corporate disputes which involves businesses in India and other countries that are signatories to the Convention. It is known as the United Nations Convention on International Settlement Agreements Resulting from Mediation. It is the first UN treaty to be named after Singapore.

EXPLAINED : INDIAN BRAIN TEMPLATES: NIMHANS

A team of neuroscientists from the National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro-Sciences, Bengaluru, has developed Indian Brain Templates (IBT) and a brain atlas. It will provide more precise reference maps for areas of interest in individual patients with neurological disorders like strokes, brain tumours, and dementia.

EXPLAINED : SUPPLEMENTARY DEMANDS FOR GRANTS

Supplementary Demand of Grants is granted when the amount authorised by the Parliament through the appropriation act for a particular service for the current financial year is found to be insufficient for that year. An estimate is presented before the Parliament for Supplementary or Additional grants by the Government. The Ministry of Finance and Ministry of Railways presents a Demand for Excess Grant.

EXPLAINED : ENGINEERS' DAY BEING CELEBRATED

Engineer’s Day is celebrated in India as a tribute to Sir Mokshagundam Vishweshvaraya. He was born on September 15, 1861, at Chikkaballapur, Karnataka.
