Army Day celebrated on 15th January

India celebrated its 71st Army Day on Tuesday, 15 January, with wishes and greetings pouring in from everywhere for the soldiers and their families.

On the occasion, an annual parade is held at Delhi’s Cariappa Parade Ground.

Narendra Modi dedicates the Colem bypass road to the nation in Kerala

Prime Minister Narendra Modi dedicated to the nation the 13-km, 2-lane Kollam bypass on NH-66 in Kerala on 15 January.

Constructed at a cost of Rs 352 crore, this highway has three major bridges over Ashtamudi Lake.

Till May 2018, Kerala had 1,782 km of national highways.

However, it has currently gone up to about 2,280 km.

Franco-German human rights award

A detained Chinese rights lawyer Yu Wensheng has won a Franco-German human rights award for his ‘exceptional contribution’ to the protection and promotion of human rights.

Yu Wensheng, who is in pre-trial detention on subversion charges, has been held incommunicado by authorities in Jiangsu’s Xuzhou city for more than a year.

His wife Xu Yan received the Franco-German Prize for Human Rights and the Rule of Law on her husband’s behalf from the French and German ambassadors to China.

Government constitutes 7-member GoM to promote real estate sector under GST system

A ministerial panel headed by Gujarat Deputy Chief Minister Nitin Patel would look into the possibility of rationalisation of GST rate in real estate sector besides formulating a composition scheme.

It was decided in GST Council meeting on 10 January to set up a 7-member Group of Ministers (GoM) to boost real estate sector under GST regime.

India's largest startup ecosystem was inaugurated in Kerala

Giving a healthy boost to its startup ecosystem, Kerala on 13 January, inaugurated Integrated Startup Complex, India’s largest startup hub with an aim to provide adequate infrastructure for startup incubation and acceleration within the state.

The eight-floor facility which is spread across 1.82 lakh sqft area will house incubators for research and development purposes across various sectors.

Fields Medal winner mathematician dies (Michael Atiyah)

One of the world's foremost mathematicians, Prof Sir Michael Atiyah, has died at the age of 89.

Sir Michael, who worked at Cambridge University before he retired, made outstanding contributions to geometry and topology.

Sir Michael was a recipient of the highest honour in mathematics, a Fields Medal. 

First EMRS National Games Competition in Hyderabad, Starting 2019

The 1st National Level Sports Meet for the students of Eklavya Model Residential Schools (EMRS) was inaugurated on 14 January by Shri Jaswantsinh Sumanbhai Bhabhor, Minister of State for Tribal Affairs at G.M.C Balayogi Stadium, Gachibowli, Hyderabad.

The three day event till Jan.16, 2019 will have competitions in 13 different disciplines of track and field that includes Hockey, Wrestling, Football, Archery, Volley Ball, Kabaddi, Handball, Kho Kho and Athletics.
