Intersessional meeting of Kimberley Process held in Mumbai

The Intersessional meeting of Kimberley Process (KP) was hosted by India in Mumbai.

India is currently the Chair of Kimberley Process Certification Scheme (KPCS) since 1st January 2018. It was handed Chairmanship by the European Union during KPCS Plenary 2018, which was held in Brussels, Belgium.

Spitzer Telescope of NASA to retire in 2020

Spitzer space telescope of NASA will be retired on January 30, 2020.

Spitzer is going to shut down permanently after about 16 years of exploring the cosmos in infrared light. By 2020, Spitzer space telescope will have operated for more than 11 years beyond its prime mission.

Sahitya Akademi announces winners of Bal Sahitya Puraskar, Yuva Puraskar

Sahitya Akademi, India’s national academy of letters, has announced a list of 22 winners of the Bal Sahitya Puraskar and 23 recipients of the Yuva Puraskar for this year.

While the Bal Puraskar will be conferred upon the winners on the Children’s Day, the day for the Yuva Puraskar is yet to be decided.

Tripura to set up museum to showcase R.D. Burman’s work

The Tripura government has decided to set up a museum to showcase the memorable works of music maestro R.D. Burman.

Rising cases of Acute Encephalitis Syndrome (AES) in Bihar

Bihar’s Muzzafarpur district has recently seen unprecedented growth in cases of encephalitis, a vector borne diseases. The death toll rose to 54.

This disease is concentrated in only one district, Muzzafarpur.

Though the exact cause has not yet been confirmed, health professionals suspect the deaths to be linked to toxins present in lychees (also spelt as litchis).

Strait of Hormuz: World’s Most Important Oil Artery

The strait lies between Oman and Iran

It links the Gulf north of it with the Gulf of Oman to the south and the Arabian Sea beyond

It is 21 miles (33 km) wide at its narrowest point, with the shipping lane just two miles (three km) wide in either direction

The UAE and Saudi Arabia have sought to find other routes to bypass the Strait, including building more oil pipelines
