Transgender Bill passed in Lok Sabha

The Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Bill, 2016, was passed on 17 Dec with 27 amendments introduced by the central government.

The Bill was first introduced in the Lok Sabha in August 2016, following which it was sent to a 31-member parliamentary standing committee. 

India, Maldives sign four pacts to boost bilateral relations

The newly elected Maldivian president Soilh and Indian PM Narendra Modi signed 4 pacts in the areas of agri business, IT, visa facilitation and cultures.

President Solih chose India as his first country to visit after assuming office and confirmed Maldives’s foreign policy will be India First.

Indian government also announced $1.4 billion financial assistance to Maldives.

Miss Philippines Catriona Gray crowned Miss Universe 2018

Catriona Gray from the Philippines claimed the Miss Universe crown for 2018 on 17 Dec, beating contestants from 93 other countries.

The 24-year-old Filipina-Australian has become the fourth Filipina to bring home the coveted title.

COP24 finalizes rules to Paris Climate Change Agreement

COP 24 or Conference of Parties meeting held in Katowice, Austria resulted in agreement among the countries about the rules to be followed when the Paris Climate Change Agreement comes into force in 2020.

The Katowice Agreement aims to deliver the Paris goals of limiting global temperatures well below 2 degree.

The finalization paves the way for implementation of the Paris Agreement, which is supposed to replace the existing Kyoto Protocol in 2020.

Ace Indian shuttler P V Sindhu lifted the prestigious season-ending World Tour Finals trophy at Guangzhou, China, on 16 Dec.

The Olympic silver medalist defeated Japan's Nozomi Okuhara 21-19, 21-17 in the summit clash. 

1984 Riots: Delhi HC pronounces verdict

The Delhi high court on 17 Dec sentenced Congress leader Sajjan Kumar to imprisonment for life for conspiracy to commit murder in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, promoting enmity and for acts against communal harmony.

The court said the riots were a “crime against humanity”.
