Issue of commemorative Postage Stamp on Rajkumar Shukla

Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Communications and Minister of State for Railways Shri Manoj Sinha released a Commemorative Postage Stamp on Rajkumar Shukla.

Rajkumar Shukla was instrumental in drawing attention of Mahatma Gandhi to the plight of Champaran peasants suffering under the oppressing rule of Britishers. And Finally, Mahthma Gandhi started Champaran Satyagrah in 1917 which resulted in peasants getting fair settlement.

Belgium Prime Minister Charles Michel resigns over migration spat

Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel has resigned amid pressure on his government over his support for the UN global compact on migration. The pressure increased after his biggest coalition partner, the right-wing N-VA party, quit the government over the issue.

Michel lost the backing of the party over his support for the UN migration pact, a troubling cause for European anti-immigration parties.

It has been seen that many European countries such as Estonia and Latvia, and also Chile (Latin America) faced the backlash from the public.

EU to reduce new car emissions by 37.5 percent by 2030

The European Union agreed on 17 Dec to a goal of cutting carbon emissions from cars by 37.5 percent in a decade.

The 28-nation bloc EU has been divided for months over how strict to be on CO2 emissions from vehicles as part of its push to reduce greenhouse gases overall by 40 percent by 2030.

New Zealand to phase out plastic shopping bags

In New Zealand, regulations for mandatory phase-out of single-use plastic shopping bags will take effect from July 1, 2019. 

Retailers will no longer be able to sell or give away single-use plastic shopping bags from July next year after the cabinet agreed to the proposed regulations for a mandatory nationwide phase-out of these bags.

IPL 2019 auction takes place in Jaipur

The IPL 2019 auction was held in Jaipur on 18 Dec.

A total of 226 Indians and 120 international players were shortlisted after the eight IPL franchises submitted their final list of players back in December 10.

The salary cap has been raised from Rs 80 to Rs 82 crores for the eight teams.

Greece and Macedonia Prime Ministers nominated 2019 Nobel Peace Prize

The Prime ministers of Macedonia and Greece, Zoran Zaev and Alexis Tsipras, are nominated for the 2019 Nobel Peace Prize for signing the Prespa Agreement between the two countries.

Prespa Agreement

For almost three decades, Greece and Macedonia were on bad terms due to naming of Macedonia and its aspiration to join NATO.

However, three months back, both countries’ prime minister signed an agreement and the new name of Macedonia will be Republic of North Macedonia.
