Govt plans 'One Health' to check antibiotics use in animals, humans

With the growing use of antibiotics in feed supplements of livestock and poultry, Indian government has launched One Health initiative to regulate the use of antibiotics.

Under One Health, Department of Biotechnology and Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) will launch a compulsory national immunization program for livestock.

According to an estimate; antibiotic used in cattle, poultry and swine indicate that India used 3% of global consumption. It is expected that the use of antibiotics will double by 2030.

India, Argentina sign MoU on Nuclear Energy Cooperation

India and Argentina 0n 18 Feb 2019 inked a Memorandum of Understanding to boost cooperation in the sector of nuclear energy.

The MoU was signed between the Department of Atomic Energy, India and National Atomic Energy Commission, Argentina for cooperation within the framework of Global Center for Nuclear Energy Partnership.

India and Argentina had signed an agreement in 2010 for cooperation in the peaceful uses of nuclear energy.

World Bank approves Rs 11000 crore loan for Dam safety

The World Bank has accepted India’s demand for Rs. 11000 Cr loan for improved dam safety in India for next 10 years.

The loan has been approved for 733 large dams in India spread in 18 states.

The money will be utilized under on-going Dam Rehabilitation and Improvement Program (DRIP).

Besides safety, maintenance and emergency plan actions, the DRIP will focus on revenue generation through tourism, fisheries and water recreation.

Sixteen States sue Donald Trump over National Emergency on Border Wall

Sixteen US states have formed a coalition to ask a federal court to block Donald Trump from proceeding with the national emergency that the president declared on 16 Feb 2019 in an effort to secure funds for his US-Mexico border wall.

The lawsuit was filed in a San Francisco court.

The states include New York, California, Maryland and Virginia and 12 other states.

India-Singapore to sign pact on skilling Indians in aviation

India and Singapore will sign an agreement for skilling Indian youths in the aviation sector at the Aero India Show on 22 Feb 2019.

Academies will be set up in Bengaluru and other places in India that will act as regional hubs for the training of Indian youths for domestic and overseas jobs in these sectors.

India-Morocco sign four MoUs

India and Morocco on 18 Feb signed four MoUs following the delegation-level talks between External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and her Moroccan counterpart Nasser Bourita in Rabat. 

The MoUs include setting up of

  1. Joint Working Group on Counter Terrorism
  2. Cooperation in Housing and Human Settlement
  3. Reciprocal facilitation of procedures for issue of Business Visa
  4. Cooperation in Youth Matters

President presents Tagore Award for Cultural Harmony

President Ram Nath Kovind on 18 Feb presented the award Tagore Award for Cultural Harmony on 18 Feb 2019.

Exponent of Manipuri dance Rajkumar Singhajit Singh was given the award for the year 2014.

Chhayanaut, a cultural organization of Bangladesh was given the award for 2015 for its role in the promotion of Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore's works and Bangla arts.

PM flags off first ever diesel-to-electric converted locomotive

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 19 Feb flagged off the first ever diesel to electric converted locomotive twin engine of ten thousand Horse Power at DLW Varanasi.

In a first, the Indian Railways has converted a diesel locomotive into an electric one, as part of efforts to completely electrify the broad gauge network.
