Pinaki Chandra Ghose set to be India’s first Lokpal

Former Supreme Court judge and current member of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), Pinaki Chandra Ghose, is likely to be India’s first anti-corruption ombudsman, or Lokpal, after his name was cleared and recommended by the high-level selection committee chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Only 26% of rural toilets use twin-leach pits

According to an analysis done by The Hindu newspaper from data compiled by National Annual Rural Sanitation Survey 2018-19, shows that just 26.6% of rural households use the recommended twin-pit system to dispose of excreta from their toilets.

Septic tanks are the most popular option, with 28% of toilets connected to a septic tank with a soak pit and 6% to a tank without a soak pit.

India to host U-17 Women's World Cup in 2020: FIFA

India will host the 2020 FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup, FIFA confirmed in a statement on 15 March 2019.

With the U-17 World Cup awarded to India, it will be an opportunity of a lifetime for the national women's team to leave a mark on the world's football map. 

INS Khanderi to be inducted in Indian Navy soon

INS Khanderi, the second of the 6 Scorpene Class Submarines, will soon be inducted into the Indian Navy by May 2019. 

INS Khanderi was launched at the Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) in Mumbai on January 12, 2017 and since then it has been undergoing trials and tests.

4th UN Environment Assembly held in Nairobi

The Fourth Environment Assembly was held in Nairobi, focusing on the theme “Innovative solutions for environmental challenges and sustainable consumption and production.

India pilots two resolutions at the UN Environment Assembly which are single-use plastics and sustainable nitrogen management, at the fourth session of United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA). The UN Environment adopted both the resolutions with consensus.

Cardless cash withdrawal service launched by SBI

The country's largest lender State Bank of India on 15 March launched cardless ATM withdrawals with its YONO Cash.

SBI will enable all its 60,000 ATMs in the next six months for this service, which will also be termed as YONO Cash Point.

The initiative will address concern of using debit card at the ATMs for cash withdrawals by eliminating possible risk associated with it.
