184 COUNTRIES HAVE JOINED COVAX FACILITY: WHO

As per World Health Organization Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, 184 countries have now joined the COVAX facility.

COVAX is the vaccines pillar of the Access to COVID-19 Tools (ACT) Accelerator. It is co-led by Gavi, the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI) and WHO. It offers doses for at least 20% of countries' populations.

EXPLAINED : SANT MISSILE

DRDO successfully flight tested indigenously developed Stand-off Anti-tank (SANT) missile. The air-to-surface missile developed by DRDO for the Indian Air Force was test fired from a roof-top launcher at the Integrated Test Range (ITR) against a static target.

EXPLAINED : DISTRICT DEVELOPMENT COUNCILS (DDC) IN J&K

The Centre amended the Jammu and Kashmir Panchayati Raj Act, 1989, to facilitate the setting up of District Development Councils (DDC), the members of which will be directly elected by voters in the Union Territory. District Development Councils (DDCs) to become a new unit of governance in Jammu and Kashmir.

EXPLAINED : WORLD STATISTICS DAY 2020

World Statistics Day is celebrated is on October 20, 2020. This year the theme is ‘Connecting the world with data we can trust’, which reflects the importance of trust, authoritative data, innovation and the public good in national statistical systems.

THIS DAY IN HISTORY

On 20 October 1774, New Regulating Act was introduced which abolished the East India Company Government and a new Government was formed. This act is of great constitutional importance as (a) it was the first step taken by the British Government to control and regulate the affairs of the East India Company in India; (b) it recognised, for the first time, the political and administrative functions of the Company; and (c) it laid the foundations of central administration in India.

It designated the Governor of Bengal as the ‘Governor-General of Bengal’ and created an Executive Council of four members to assist him. The first such Governor-General was Lord Warren Hastings.
