Khelo India Games concludes in Pune

The Khelo India Youth Games concluded in Pune on 20 Jan 2019.

Maharashtra secured maximum number of medals. It amassed 228 medals which included 85 gold, 62 silver and 51 bronze.

Richest 1% get richer by 39%: Oxfam

According to a study conducted by Oxfam; top 1% of India’s richest are getting richer by 39% as against just 3% increase in wealth for the bottom half of the population.

Globally, billionaires' fortunes rose by 12% or USD 2.5 billion a day in 2018, whereas the poorest half of the world's population saw their wealth decline by 11%.

Narendra Modi inaugurates L&T’s howitzer gun-manufacturing unit

Prime minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the howitzer gun-manufacturing unit of Larsen & Toubro (L&T) at Hazira in Surat on 19 Jan 2019.

L&T had won the Rs 4,500-crore contract to supply 100 units of the K9 Vajra-T 155 mm/52 calibre Tracked Self-Propelled gun systems to the Indian Army in 2017.

L&T's ASC in Hazira is the first manufacturing facility in the private sector to produce advanced armoured platforms for the defence sector.

Filipino Muslims vote in referendum on autonomous region

Muslims in the southern Philippines voted on 21st Jan 2019 in a referendum on a new autonomous region that seeks to end nearly half a century of unrest.

Results are expected no later than Jan. 26.

If the measure is approved, a second referendum on Feb. 6 will ask residents of Lanao del Norte province and seven towns in North Cotabato province with a sizeable Muslim population to decide whether they want to join the new region as well.

SEBI moots creating commodity indices

The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has proposed allowing commodity exchanges to create indices on which futures contracts can be introduced.

Such indices can be based on the most liquid contracts traded on the bourses and have to be diversified with the weightage of a single constituent capped at 20%.

India ranks third in research on artificial intelligence

An analysis by research agency Itihaasa, has ranked India third in the world in terms of high quality research publications in artificial intelligence (AI).

The agency had computed the number of citable documents in the field of AI between 2013 and 2017 as listed out by Scimago.

With the growing demand and applicability of artificial intelligence, IIT Hyderabad is set to launch a full-fledged BTech program in AI starting from the academic year 2019-2020.
