CASSAVA: FOR BIOETHANOL PRODUCTION

Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR)-Central Tuber Crops Research Institute (CTCRI) have found CASSAVA as a raw material for bioethanol production to fulfil the Ethanol Blending Petrol (EBP) programme target of 2025 by India.

Cassava has a high starch content and the ability to grow under low management conditions. It is a major source of calories and carbs for people in developing countries.

JUNE 2021: SUMMER SOLSTICE

21st June is the longest day in the Northern Hemisphere, in fact this day is alluded to as the Summer solstice. At the June solstice, Earth is situated in its orbit so that our world’s North Pole is inclining most toward the sun.

GREAT BARRIER REEF SHOULD BE LISTED AS ‘IN DANGER’: UN

UN committee prescribed adding the Great Barrier Reef to the list of “in danger” World Heritage Sites.

The Great Barrier Reef is the world's largest coral reef system made out of more than 2,900 individual reefs and 900 islands extending for more than 2,300 kilometres over a space of around 344,400 square kilometres. The reef is situated in the Coral Sea, off the shore of Queensland, Australia.

EBOLA OUTBREAK DECLARED OVER IN GUINEA BY WHO

An Ebola outbreak in Guinea that started in February, infecting 16 people and killing 12, has been declared over by the World Health Organization (WHO).

Ebola virus disease (EVD), formerly known as Ebola haemorrhagic fever, is a severe illness in humans.

BIOTECH-KISAN PROGRAMME UNDER MINISTRY OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY

Recently, the Ministry of Science and Technology has issued a Special Call for the NorthEast Region as a part of its Mission Programme “Biotech-Krishi Innovation Science Application Network (Biotech-KISAN)”.

It is a scientist-farmer partnership scheme. It was launched in 2017. This is a farmer-centric scheme developed by and with farmers under the Department of Biotechnology, Ministry of Science and Technology. 

Around 146 Biotech-KISAN Hubs have been set up covering all 15 agroclimatic zones and 110 Aspirational Districts in India.

BLACK SOFTSHELL TURTLE

Recently, the Assam forest department has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with 2 Non-governmental Organizations (NGOs) and adopted a Vision Document to raise at least 1,000 black softshell turtles by 2030.

Black softshell turtle's Scientific Name is Nilssonia nigricans. It is a freshwater species and there are 29 species of freshwater turtles and tortoises found in India.

UN’S ANNUAL REPORT OF SECRETARY-GENERAL ON CHILDREN ARMED CONFLICT

Recently, the United Nations has published its “Annual Report of Secretary-General on Children & Armed Conflict (CAAC)”. According to the report, about 19,300 children, including boys and girls, have suffered from one or more incidents of grave violations in 2020.
