SCTIMST launches Agappe Chitra Magna

The Agappe Chitra Magna was launched by Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute of Medical Sciences and Technology. The Agappe Chitra Magna is an RNA extraction kit developed in collaboration with Agappe Diagnostics Ltd, which develops in vitro diagnostics and is a manufacturing company based in Cochin.

NTPC and ONGC sign MoU to set up JV for Renewable Energy Business

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed by the National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) Ltd., a Public Sector Undertaking(PSU) under the Ministry of Power and the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited (ONGC), the PSU under the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, to establish a Joint Venture Company for Renewable Energy business. The pact signed by the companies will allow both the companies to increase their footprint in the Renewable Energy sector at an accelerated pace.

International Day for Biological Diversity observed on 22 May

The International Day for Biological Diversity (IDB) has been declared on 22 May by the United Nations to raise awareness and understanding of the issues of biodiversity. The theme of International Day for Biodiversity 2020 is “Our Solutions are in Nature”.

Alternative dwarfing genes in wheat can eliminate rice crop residue burning

The burning of rice residues in India is one of the major reasons for increased air pollution in India. Keeping the issues of germination and air pollution at the forefront, scientists at the Agharkar Research Institute (ARI) in Pune, have mapped two alternative dwarfing genes Rht14 and Rht18 in wheat. 

Discovery by IIT Guwahati to prevent memory loss due to Alzheimer

Researchers working at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati have discovered new ways to help in the prevention or reduce short-term memory losses associated with Alzheimer’s disease. Methods like the application of low-voltage electric fields, and the use of ‘trojan peptides’ to stop the aggregation of neurotoxic molecules in the brain were reported in the research.

Early notification of Ecologically Sensitive Area of Western Ghats

The Chief Ministers, Cabinet Ministers and State Government Officers of six states viz, Goa, Gujarat, Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra, and Tamil Nadu interacted with the Union Minister of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Shri Prakash Javadekar on 21 May 2020 to discuss the issues concerning notification of Ecologically Sensitive Area (ESA) about the Western Ghats via video conferencing.

Textiles Committee comes up with fully indigenous Design and Make in India PPE Testing Equipment

The Textiles Committee, Mumbai will do the testing and certification of the Personal Protective Equipment(PPE) body coveralls required for healthcare workers and other COVID-19 warriors. The machines have been conceptualized, designed and developed completely in-house.

Protocol developed by Scientists to determine Quantum Entanglement

A novel protocol has been developed by the Scientists working at the S. N. Bose National Centre for Basic Sciences (SNBNCBS), Kolkata, an autonomous institute functioning under the Department of Science and Technology to determine whether a pair of electrons are in an entangled state. Determining the entangled state will help in using the electrons safely as resources for enabling quantum information processing tasks.

Quantum entanglement is the physical phenomenon which occurs when a pair or group of particles is generated, and they interact, in a manner, which makes it impossible to describe the quantum state of each particle of the pair or group independently of the state of the others.
