NOROVIRUS

At present, the United Kingdom is reporting an outbreak of norovirus. Since the end of May, England has recorded 154 cases of norovirus in the country.

Norovirus is sometimes called the winter vomiting bug, and is the most common cause of gastroenteritis. It is very contagious. Infection includes non-bloody diarrhoea, vomiting, and stomach pain. People suffering from norovirus disease can shed billions of virus particles.

CHINA AIMS TO ACTIVATE WORLD’S FIRST CLEAN NUCLEAR REACTOR

Scientists of the Chinese government have unveiled plans for an experimental nuclear reactor that does not require water for cooling and will be the world's first clean reactor. It will run on liquid thorium instead of uranium and is expected to be safer than the traditional reactors.

As molten salt, when exposed to air, cools and solidifies quickly thus insulating the thorium, causing any potential leak to spill very little radiation into the environment compared to the leaks from traditional reactors.

GOVERNMENT HAS CAPPED TRADE MARGIN FOR FIVE MEDICAL DEVICES

So far around 620 brands have faced price reduction with the government capping trade margins on 5 more critical medical devices. Cap has been put on devices such as digital thermometer and pulse oximeter which are being used extensively in the treatment of COVID-19, at 70% which is effective from 20th July.

On July 13th, the National Pharmaceuticals Pricing Authority (NPPA) had called on the rule to put a cap on the trade margin of 5 medical devices namely glucometer, nebuliser, BP monitor, oximeter, and digital thermometer.

RENEWABLE INTEGRATION IN INDIA REPORT BY NITI AAYOG AND IEA

On 22nd July, a report, 2021 Renewables Integration in India 2021 was jointly launched by NITI Aayog and IEA. This report is based on the outcome of workshops held in 3 states along with the Governments of Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Gujarat to understand the energy transition challenges which are faced by these renewable-rich states. This report utilizes IEA modelling results to show the effects of various flexibility options on the power system.

INS AIRAVAT

On 24 Jul 2021, Indian Naval Ship Airavat arrived at the Port of Jakarta, Indonesia, carrying essential COVID-19 relief supplies. The ship has brought 5 Cryogenic containers containing 100 MT of Liquid Oxygen and 300 Concentrators to support Indonesia in its fight against the ongoing pandemic.

INS Airavat is the 3rd Shardul-class amphibious warfare vessel of the Indian Navy.
