National Book Trust has launched #StayHomeIndiaWithBooks initiative

The National Book Trust(NBT) operating under the Ministry of Human Resource and Development has launched Stay Home India with Books Initiative to encourage people to read books while at home amid the coronavirus scare. The Initiative was launched on 25 March, and more than a hundred books are available for FREE Download in PDF format.

Scientists from the Agharkar Research Institute (ARI), Pune have developed a biofortified, high protein wheat variety

Scientists working at the Agharkar Research Institute (ARI) situated in Pune, have developed a biofortified wheat variety named MACS 4028, which shows high protein content. The wheat variety developed by the scientists depicted high protein content approximating to 14.7%, has better nutritional quality with quantity of zinc equal to 40.3 ppm, and iron content equal to 46.1 ppm respectively. The wheat variety is resistant to leaf rust, stem rust, brown wheat mite, foliar aphids, and root aphids.

Glaciers in Sikkim are losing mass faster than other parts of the Himalaya

Scientists at the Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology (WIHG) situated in Dehradun under the Department of Science and Technology, have found that glaciers in Sikkim are melting at a higher rate compared to other regions of Himalaya. The response of 23 glaciers of Sikkim to climate change was analysed for the period of 1991-2015 and revealed that glaciers in Sikkim have deglaciated and retreated a lot during 1991 to 2015 period.

The Central Government is going to launch CoWin-20

The Central Government is going to launch the CoWin-20 app that will help individuals to track Coronavirus infection by tracking the smartphone location and therefore, will help restraint community transmission. The app will help in tracing travel history of individuals infected with the virus.

Finance Minister has announced measures under Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Ann Yojana to help the poor tackle the pandemic

The head of the economic task force created to combat Coronavirus Pandemic, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman 26 March announced Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Ann Yojana(PMGKAY) to help the poor tackle difficulties caused due to economic disruption. Under PMGKAY, 80 crore people will be covered and will include cash transfer to the poor and the migrants through Direct Benefit Transfer. Also 5kg of rice or wheat will be given to the poor in addition to what they are already getting.

The Cabinet Committee has approved the construction of Aligarh-Harduaganj flyover

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, has given its consent for the construction of Aligarh-Harduaganj flyover by Ministry of Railways. The full span of the railway flyover will be 22 kilometres and, the project is expected to be finished by 2024-25 with the cost of construction amounting more than Rs. 1285 crore.

Cabinet Committee has approved the recapitalization of RRBs to improve their Capital to Risk-Weighted Assets Ratio

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs(CCEA) gave its assent for the continuation of the process of recapitalization of Regional Rural Banks (RRBs). The utilization of Rs.670 crore (i.e. 50% of the total recapitalization support of Rs.1340 crore) has also been approved from the central government share for the scheme of Recapitalization of RRBs upon the condition of release of proportionate share by the sponsor banks.

DPIIT has set up a Control Room to track the status of transportation and delivery of goods and essential commodities

The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) functioning under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry has established a control room to track the real-time status of transportation and delivery of goods, essential commodities to the common man. The Control room is also monitoring the difficulties being faced by various stakeholders during the 21 day lockdown period starting from 25 March 2020 to 14 March 2020.
