China has ranked second as the world’s second-largest weapons manufacturer

The Chinese arms industry has made the Asian nation the world's second-largest producer of munitions. A decade ago, when China relied on imports. China has been ranked ahead of Russia, from whom the country used to buy many weapons.

Ramsar Convention has added 10 more sites from India

On 28th January 2020, the Union Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar announced that India has added ten more wetlands to sites protected by the Ramsar Convention. With this, a total of 37 sites in the country have been recognised under the international treaty.

It is one of the oldest inter-governmental accords for preserving the ecological character of wetlands. It is also known as the Convention on Wetlands.

NASA’s Spitzer Space Telescope

The Spitzer Space Telescope is a space-borne observatory. NASA’s Spitzer Mission studied the universe in infrared light for more than 16 years. This will come to an end because it is low on fuel. Also, it has been drifting away from Earth for a few years now. Engineers will decommission the Spitzer aircraft, after which it will cease to conduct science operations. 

African cheetahs to be introduced in Indian forests

On 28th January 2020, the Supreme Court lifted its seven-year stay on a proposal to introduce African cheetahs from Namibia into the Indian habitat on an experimental basis. 

The rare Indian cheetah is almost extinct in the country, the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) had filed an application seeking permission to introduce the African cheetah from Namibia.

Alok Kansal is appointed as the new general manager of Western Railway

Alok Kansal is appointed as the General Manager of the Western Railway. This post was then held by Anil Kumar Gupta, who retired in November 2019.

Maharashtra government's Shiv Bhojan scheme

On 26th January 2020, the Maharashtra government launched the ‘Shiv Bhojan’ scheme. The scheme aims to provide a meal to the poor at subsidized rates. Under this scheme, the state government will be providing meals to the poor at just Rs 10.

Ganga Yatra under Namami Gange Mission begins in Uttar Pradesh

On 27th January 2020, the five day Ganga Yatra was started in Uttar Pradeshwith an aim to create awareness about the holy river. CM Yogi Adityanath along with Chief Minister of Uttarakhand Trivendra Singh Rawat and Union Minister Sanjeev Baliyan flagged off the yatra from Bijnor, a place where Ganga enters Uttar Pradesh.

Sheikh Khalid has been appointed as the new Prime Minister of Qatar

On 28th January 2020, Sheikh Khalid bin Khalifa bin Abdulaziz Al Thani was appointed as the new Prime Minister of Qatar. Khalid was appointed by Qatar’s ruler Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani through a royal decree after Prime Minister Sheikh Abdullah's resignation was accepted.
