PROTESTING IS A FUNDAMENTAL RIGHT: UN

As per the United Nations, People have the right to demonstrate peacefully. Governments could not prohibit protests by making “generalised references to public order or public safety, or an unspecified risk of potential violence”.

The UN committee reaffirmed that protesting peacefully, online or in person, is a fundamental human right. The UN committee, made up of 18 independent experts, is tasked to monitor how countries implement the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), under which Article 21 guarantees the right to peaceful assembly.

AERIAL SEEDING

Haryana Forest Department has recently employed AS technique to improve green cover in the Aravalli area. A plantation technique wherein seed balls are sprayed on the ground using aerial devices, including planes, helicopters or drones. Seed balls are seeds covered with a mixture of clay, compost, char and other components. he coating provides the required weight for seeds to drop on a predetermined location rather than disperse in the wind.

PRODUCTION LINKED INCENTIVE SCHEME FOR ELECTRONICS MANUFACTURERS

Global electronics giants such as Samsung, Pegatron, Flex, and Foxconn among others are looking to either set up shop or expand their presence in India, courtesy their interest in PLI. The scheme would give incentives of 4-6% to electronics companies which manufacture mobile phones and other electronic components such as transistors, nano-electronic components etc. It will be active for 5 years with FY 2019-20 considered as the base year for calculation of incentives.

ONLINE AUDIT OF PANCHAYAT FUNDS

Ministry of Panchayati Raj to conduct an online audit of Panchayat funds. The Ministry of Panchayati Raj has decided to conduct an online audit of 20% of the estimated 2.5 lakh gram panchayats across the country for 2019-20. The audit will be conducted through AuditOnline as part of Panchayat Enterprise Suite (PES) under the e-panchayat Mission Mode Project initiated by the MoPR. The focus will be on how they used the Finance Commission (FC) grants.

ATAL INNOVATION MISSION LAUNCHES 'AIM-iCREST'

NITI Aayog’s Atal Innovation Mission (AIM), has launched AIM iCREST. It is an Incubator Capabilities enhancement program for a Robust Ecosystem focused on creating high performing Startups. It was launched in partnership with Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and Wadhwani Foundation.

NATESA OF RAJASTHAN TEMPLE RETURNS TO INDIA

A rare sandstone idol is returning to India after 22 years which was smuggled out of the country in 1998. Natesa icon which is currently at the Indian High Commission, London, was originally from the Ghateswara Temple, Baroli, Rajasthan.

The sandstone Natesa figure stands tall at almost 4 ft. It is a rare depiction of Shiva in the late 9th century Prathihara style of Rajasthan.

PIED CUCKOO, HARBINGER OF MONSOON, TO BE TRACKED IN MIGRATION, CLIMATE CHANGE

The first study in India to trace and observe the migratory routes of the pied cuckoo started in India. Wildlife Institute of India (WII), Indian Institute of Remote Sensing (IIRS) and the Department of Biotechnology, has begun a study of the migration of the pied cuckoo from Africa to India. It is the first study in the country to trace and observe the migratory routes of the pied cuckoo. It will help gather data and information on climate change.

RESEARCHERS DISCOVER STEM CELLS IN OPTIC NERVE THAT PRESERVE VISION

Researchers discover stem cells in the optic nerve that preserve vision. It was led by researchers at the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM). It provides potential new ways to treat a leading cause of blindness in American adults. Researchers found that lamina progenitor cells may be responsible for insulating the fibres immediately after they leave the eye, supporting the connections between nerve cells on the pathway to the brain.

US SIGNS MOU TO SUPPORT VIETNAMESE FISHERMEN AGAINST CHINESE 'INTIMIDATION'

The US has signed a MoU with Vietnam. Memorandum of Understanding includes support against illegal "intimidation" of the latter's fishermen at sea. It aims to strengthen Vietnam's fisheries management and law enforcement capabilities.
