206TH SESSION OF GOVERNING COUNCIL OF THE INTER-PARLIAMENTARY UNION TO BE HELD FROM NOV 1

The 206th Session of the Governing Council of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) will be held from 1 to 4 November 2020. It is an Extraordinary Virtual Session, which is being organised in place of a full-fledged in-person Statutory Assembly of IPU due to the outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic. The agenda of the Virtual Session inter-alia includes the election of the new President of IPU through a remote electronic secret ballot. The term of the new President of IPU will be from 2020-23.

YASHVARDHAN K. SINHA APPOINTED AS NEW CHIEF INFORMATION COMMISSIONER

The Centre will appoint former Indian Foreign Service officer and Information Commissioner Yashvardhan Sinha the new Chief Information Commissioner.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, through video conferencing, distributed loans to nearly 300,000 street vendors under the Pradhan Mantri Street Vendors’ Atmanirbhar Nidhi Yojana. 

The PM SVANidhi scheme, funded by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, was launched in June, with an aim to provide credit for working capital to street vendors who have been affected due to the Covid-19 crisis. PM SVANidhi ensures a working capital loan up to Rs 10,000 for vendors, and rewards digital transactions.

EXPLAINED: WORLD CITIES DAY

World Cities Day is celebrated on 31st October 2020. Under the overarching theme of Better City, Better Life, the aim of the day is to focus the international community’s attention on urbanisation as a central issue for development. The sub-theme for this year is Valuing our communities and cities, and the Global Observance will be hosted in Nakuru, Kenya.

Sardar Vallabhbhai Zaverbhai Patel, 'Iron man of India', was born on 31 October 1875 at Nadiad, Gujarat. Patel was the first Deputy Prime Minister and the first Home Minister of Independent India. He is called the "Unifier of India".
