Dal Lake to be declared Eco-Sensitive Zone

The J&K Government has set up a ten-member committee to declare Dal Lake and its surrounding areas as an eco-sensitive zone (ESZ), following the concerns over its shrinking size. The decision is being taken based on the study that was conducted by the Dredging Corporation of India (DCI).

Key Points:

  • Encroachments and Pollution have resulted in the Dal Lake shrinking from its original area of 22 square kilometres to about 10 square kilometres, according to an assessment by the Dredging Corporation of India (DCI) in 2017.
  • The DCI has found that the world-famous lake’s capacity has shrunk to about 40 per cent and that its water quality has deteriorated.
  • This committee shall finalise the draft notification within a span of one month, all the facilities and infrastructure to the committee shall be provided by the Housing and Urban Development Department.
  • Night Soil discharge from 800-900 houseboats is polluting the water body.

About Eco-Sensitive Zones:

Eco-Sensitive Zones (ESZs) /Ecologically Fragile Areas (EFAs) are areas within 10 km around Protected Areas, Wildlife Sanctuaries and National Parks. Eco-Sensitive Zones are notified by the MoEFCC, Govt of India under the Environment Protection Act 1986. In certain cases with sensitive corridors, crucial for landscape linkage, even area beyond 10 km width can also be included in the ESZ. The main aim is to regulate few activities around the Wildlife Sanctuaries and National Parks so as to minimise the negative impacts of such activities on the fragile ecosystem encompassing the protected areas.
