Darjeeling Green and White Tea gets a Geographical Indication(GI) Tag

Green and white tea of the hills have been registered as GI products in the country.

Key Points:

  • Green Tea does not undergo the process of withering and oxidation.
  • White Tea, the most delicate tea varieties, is because it is minimally processed and leaves are harvested before the leaves open completely.
  • These two varieties of Darjeeling tea have been registered under Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act 1999, with effect from October 2019.
  • The Geographical Indications are defined by the WTO’s TRIPS (Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights) Agreement.

Benefits:

  • GI Tag to tea verities will "strengthen the protection of the intellectual property rights of the Darjeeling tea" which is considered as "niche and luxury" products in the country and abroad.
  • Products sold with the GI tag get premium pricing also.
  • Some of the products with GI Tag: Mysore Silk, Mysore Agarbathi, Kancheepuram Silk, Orissa Ikat, Channapatna Toys & Dolls, and Coimbatore Wet Grinder, Mysore Pak (sweet), Tanjavur Veena, Pusa Basmati 1 (a high-yielding variety of scented Basmati rice) etc.

GI Tag:

GI status is an indication that identifies goods as produced from a particular area, which has special quality or reputation attributable to its geographical origin.

  • GI registration confers:
  1. Legal protection to the products.
  2. Prevents unauthorised use of a GI by others.
  3. Helps consumers get quality products of desired traits.
  4. Promotes economic prosperity of producers of goods by enhancing demand in national and international markets.
  5. GI registration is essential to get protection in other countries.
