Defence acquisitions worth Rs 38,900 Crore cleared by DAC

The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) has given its approval for the capital acquisition of various equipment and platforms worth Rs.38900 crore required by the Indian Armed Forces on 3 July 2020.

  • The meeting was held under the chairmanship of the Defence Minister of India, Rajnath Singh and emphasized on the design and development of Indigenous technologies for the use of the Indian Armed Forces.
  • The approval given by the DAC includes acquisition from the Indian industry, which amounts to Rs.31130 Crore.
  • The manufacturing of the defence equipment will be done in India, and the Indian Defence Industry will be involved in the production with MSMEs participating as prime-tier vendors.
  • The indigenous content in some of the projects will be up to 80 percent of the cost of the project, and many of these have been made possible due to technology transfer from DRDO to the indigenous industry.
  • The technologies that will be developed include Long-Range Land Attack Cruise Missile Systems, BMP armament upgrades and Software Defined Radios for the Army, Pinaka ammunitions and Astra Missiles for the Air Force and Navy.
  • The designs and development will cost around Rs.20400 crore.
  • The DAC has also approved the proposal for procurement of 21 MIG-29, up-gradation of existing 59 Mig-29 aircraft along with the procurement of 12 Su-30 MKI aircraft to resolve the long-felt necessity of the Indian Air Force to increase its fighter squadrons.
