Department of Science and Technology to manufacture automated Ventilators

Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology(SCTIMST), an institute of National Importance under the Department of Science and Technology has tied up with Wipro 3D to design and build a prototype of automated emergency ventilators jointly.

Key Points:

  • The ventilator system will be based on an Artificial Manual Breathing Unit (AMBU), developed by the institute.
  • AMBU bag, also known as a bag-valve-mask is a hand-held device which provides positive pressure ventilation to the patient who is unable to breathe or has difficulties in breathing.
  • A regular AMBU requires an observer for its operations, which is non-advisable and highly susceptible if in close contact with the COVID-19 patient.
  • The ventilators will be very helpful in meeting urgent needs during the COVID-19 crisis and are called AMBU (Artificial Manual Breathing Unit).
  • The portability of the Ventilators will be helpful for temporary cases since many places and sites are being temporarily converted into Medical Wards to isolate the individuals.
  • Currently, India imports Ventilators from Switzerland, mass production of indigenous Ventilators will reduce transportation time and will provide a speedy solution to the increasing demand of Ventilators during the Coronavirus Crisis.
