Dharma Chakra Day celebration to begin on 4 July 2020

The Ministry of Culture, Government of India, has partnered with the International Buddhist Confederation (IBC) to celebrate Asadha Poornima on 4 July 2020 as Dharma Chakra Day.

Key Points:

  • The day marks the first sermon of Buddha to his first five ascetic disciples at the Deer Park in Rsipatana located in the present-day Sarnath near Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh.
  • The Buddhists across the globe celebrate the day as Dharma Chakra Pravartana or “Turning of the Wheel of Dharma” and is observed by both the Hindus and Buddhists as Guru Poornima to pay respect to their Gurus (Teachers).
  • The event is in line with the historical legacy of India as the land of Buddha’s enlightenment.
  • Various activities are to take place virtually including addresses by prominent leaders of the country, and the President of Mongolia will also read out an address and a valuable Indian origin, Buddhist Manuscript that has been [reserved in Mongolia for several centuries will also be presented to the Indian President.
  • Many Buddhist religious leaders, Scholars and Masters from various parts of the globe will stream events and messages from Bodh Gaya and Sarnath.
