Discovery by IIT Guwahati to prevent memory loss due to Alzheimer

Researchers working at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati have discovered new ways to help in the prevention or reduce short-term memory losses associated with Alzheimer’s disease.

Key Points:

  • The team of researchers was headed by Prof. Vibin Ramakrishnan, of the Department of Biosciences and Bioengineering, and Prof. Harshal Nemade, from the Department of Electronics and Electrical Engineering, of IIT Guwahati.
  • During the research, the neurochemical principles of Alzheimer’s were studied, and new ways were explored for the prevention of the accumulation of neurotoxic molecules in the brain which are associated with short-term memory loss.
  • Methods like the application of low-voltage electric fields, and the use of ‘trojan peptides’ to stop the aggregation of neurotoxic molecules in the brain were reported in the research.
  • The development of Alzheimer’s disease cure is of much importance in India as India has the third-highest number of Alzheimer’s patients around the globe after China and US and over four million people getting affected by memory loss associated with it.
  • Many of the current methods of treatment only help in addressing some of the symptoms of the disease entirely but no therapeutic approach yet which can treat the underlying causes of Alzheimer’s completely.
