DRAFT NATIONAL STRATEGY FOR RURAL DEVELOPMENT BY MINISTRY OF TOURISM

Context:

Recently, the Ministry of Tourism has released 3 draft strategies to support the tourism sector in consequence of the covid-19 pandemic. Draft strategies were presented with roadmaps to foster India as a rural and medical tourism destination.

What is its Significance?

• It aims to position India as a place for meetings, conferences and exhibitions.
• It aims to expand and promote local products through tourism to produce income and jobs in rural areas and empower local communities.
• It will likewise help in reducing migration from rural areas, poverty alleviation and sustainable development.

Draft National Strategy and Roadmap for Medical and Wellness Tourism:

• It is an initiative towards Atmanirbhar Bharat.
• It aims at promoting India as an accessible and affordable destination for medical treatments and wellness courses.
• Key drivers for the development of medical tourism and wellness tourism includes affordability & accessibility of good healthcare services, facilitation around hospitality services, minimal waiting time, availability of the latest medical technologies & accreditations.
• This draft is in accordance with the government of India’s recognition of medical value travel and wellness tourism as a significant sector that has the capability of speeding up India’s development & attaining the objective of Atma Nirbhar Bharat.
