Dramatic decline in arctic sea ice noted by NCPOR

The National Centre of Polar and Ocean Research (NCPOR) has found that there has been a dramatic decrease in Arctic sea ice due to global warming. This decline of ice has led to a localized increase in evaporation, air humidity, cloud cover, and rainfall.

Key Points:

  • NCPOR has noted that the maximum decline in Arctic sea ice took place in July 2019 since 1979.
  • Since 1970, the sea ice has been decreasing at a rate of '-4.7%' per decade, whereas its rate was '-13%' in July 2019 almost after 40 years.
  • If the decline of ice is continuous, then it is predicted that no ice would be left in the Arctic Sea by the year 2050, which poses a danger for humanity and the entire environment.
  • Satellite data collected from 1979 to 2019 is helping NCPOR to understand the rate at which surface is facing warming and the changes in global atmospheric circulation.
  • It has been suggested by the study that the decline of the Arctic sea ice area and the increase in the summer season's duration and autumn seasons duration have affected the local climate and weather over the Arctic Ocean and its marginal seas.
  • The loss of ice cover in the Arctic sea has had strong effects on other components of the climate system such as reduction of heat and momentum, water vapour, and other material exchange between the atmosphere and the sea.
  • The point to be worried about is that the volume of ice formation during winters is not as good as the volume of ice loss during summers.
