Early notification of Ecologically Sensitive Area of Western Ghats

The Chief Ministers, Cabinet Ministers and State Government Officers of six states viz, Goa, Gujarat, Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra, and Tamil Nadu interacted with the Union Minister of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Shri Prakash Javadekar on 21 May 2020 to discuss the issues concerning notification of Ecologically Sensitive Area (ESA) about the Western Ghats via video conferencing.

Key Points:

  • A High-Level Working Group under the Chairmanship of Dr Kasturirangan was constituted by the central government for the sustainable and inclusive development of the region, keeping in mind the conservation and protection of biodiversity of Western Ghats.
  • The recommendations of the Kasturirangan committee included the geographical areas under the purview of the six States of Goa, Gujarat, Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra, and Tamil Nadu to be declared as Ecologically Sensitive Areas.
  • Under the draft notification that was issued in October 2018, areas had been mentioned which notified the ESA but the states have expressed different views regarding activities and extent of the area specified in the notification.
  • The six states have expressed the desire to accelerate the notification process to protect the interest of ecology and environment.
