EESL signs pact with Coal India

• Energy Efficiency Services Ltd (EESL) has signed a memorandum of understanding with Coal India Ltd (CIL) for implementation of energy efficiency projects in CIL and its seven subsidiaries.
• As per the MoU, EESL will carry out energy efficiency projects in all CIL establishments, including office buildings and mines.
• EESL seeks to unlock the energy efficiency market in India, estimated at $12 billion that can potentially result in energy savings of up to 20 percent of current consumption, by way of innovative business and implementation models.
• Energy Efficiency Services Ltd (EESL):
  • EESL is a public sector entity under the administration of Ministry of Power.
  • It is a Joint Venture of NTPC Limited, PFC, REC and POWERGRID to facilitate implementation of energy efficiency projects.
  • EESL will work as ESCO, as Consultancy Organization for CDM, Energy Efficiency, etc as a Resource Centre for capacity building of SDAs, Utilities, financial institutions, etc.
  • EESL will also lead the market-related actions of the NMEEE.
  • It is registered under the companies Act, 1956 on 10th December 2009 and the commencement of business certificate is obtained on 11th February 2010.
  • It will be the first such company exclusively for implementation of energy efficiency in South Asia and amongst a very few such instances in the world
• Coal India Limited (CIL:
  • Coal India Limited (CIL) is an Indian state-controlled coal mining company headquartered in Kolkata, West Bengal, India.
  • It is the largest coal producer company in the world and contributes around 82% of the coal production in India.
  • In April 2011, CIL was conferred the Maharatna status by the Union Government of India.
