Efforts of DRDO in the nation’s fight against COVID-19

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has been tracking the spread of Coronavirus (COVID-19) from the time it started spreading in Wuhan Province of China. DRDO has developed four different products to win the ‘War against Corona’.

Key Points:

  • Sizable quantities of Hand Sanitizers have been produced and distributed to significant establishments in the capital.
  • Around 4,000 litres of hand sanitizer has been provided to Indian Armed forces, Armed Forces Medical Corps, Defence Security Corps, 1,500 litres to Ministry of Defence, 300 litres to Parliament, and 500 litres to various security establishments and high offices to address sanitization issue at first, to keep administration work without fear of contamination.
  • DRDO has provided 20,000 three layer masks and 1,000 litres of hand sanitizers to the Delhi Police.
  • The total production capacity of sanitizers is 20,000 to 30,000 litres per day in 200-500 ml bottles. The cost of sanitizers is less than Rs 120 per litre.
  • Five-layer N99 masks have also been developed by DRDO, and two layers of the five are made of nanomesh. The capacity of production is 10,000 in a day with the cost of each mask at Rs 70.
  • The bodysuits developed for radiological emergencies for paramedical staff has now been converted into a full bodysuit to stop contamination. The suits cost about Rs. 7000 and are widely tested by DRDO. The capacity of production of suits in a day is 10,000.
  • The Society for Biomedical Technology programme, functioning under DRDO has been modified to fulfil the required needs. The programme is now deployed to manufacture ventilators, and the focus is on making “multiple patients ventilators”. The price of each ventilator unit is four lakh. Initially, approximately 5,000 ventilators are to be produced in the first month and then it will be gradually increased to 10,000 in the next month.
