Electrochemical sensing platform for detecting carcinogenic compounds developed by IASST

An electrochemical sensing platform for the detection of carcinogenic or mutagenic compounds has been developed by the Institute of Advanced Study in Science and Technology (IASST), Guwahati.

Key Points:

  • The mutagenic and carcinogenic compounds are N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) and N-nitrosodiethanolamine (NDEA) and are found in food items like bacon, cured meat, cheese, and low-fat milk.
  • The platform was developed with the help of a modified electrode by immobilizing carbon nanomaterials (carbon dots) in DNA.
  • The changing food habits of urban Indians exposes them to harmful chemicals which are necessary to be detected to protect them.
  • The techniques that are utilized for detection of Nitrosamine have detection limits in micrometre (μM).
  • The electrodes of the electrochemical sensor were developed by the deposition of carbon dots and then immobilizing bacterial DNA on them.
  • The DNA compounds formed are electrochemically active, and increase the peak current in electrochemical set-up, helping in the detection of the chemical.
  • Many other chemical compounds which are structurally similar were also added to examine whether it can interfere with the system. But since these the DNA sequence cannot be altered by the chemicals, hence they do not affect the system.
