EU to reduce new car emissions by 37.5 percent by 2030

The European Union agreed on 17 Dec to a goal of cutting carbon emissions from cars by 37.5 percent in a decade.

The 28-nation bloc EU has been divided for months over how strict to be on CO2 emissions from vehicles as part of its push to reduce greenhouse gases overall by 40 percent by 2030.

There was also agreement on an interim target of a 15 percent cut for both cars and vans by 2025.

However, the EU countries have still not reached a conclusion on how to cut the carbon emissions by trucks.

Under the COP21 agreement in Paris, the EU pledged to cut greenhouse gas emissions (like those of carbon dioxide and methane) by 40 percent of 1990 levels by 2030, in all economic sectors.
