World Bicycle Day: June 3

  • The first-ever World Bicycle Day was celebrated across the world on June 3, 2018. To mark the day, New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) in collaboration with Smartbike and World Cycling Alliance is organizing an event.
  • The event which saw huge participation from enthusiast cyclists was flagged off by Vice-President Venkaiah Naidu from Charkha Museum.
  • Acknowledging the uniqueness, longevity and versatility of the bicycle and that it is a simple, affordable, reliable, clean and environmentally fit sustainable means of transportation, fostering environmental stewardship and health, the UN General Assembly decided to declare 3 June World Bicycle Day.

Maharashtra education department issues safety norms for school

  • The Maharashtra School Education department on June 2, 2018 issued guidelines for schools and junior colleges, mandating certain safety measures in students' interest.
  • A circular issued by the department said that every school and junior college should install CCTV cameras. Attendance should be marked thrice a day, and if a student is found missing, parents should be informed immediately through a text message, the circular said.
  • No student should be punished in such a way that he or she would suffer a mental or physical trauma, it said. The guidelines also restrict entry of unidentified persons on the school premises.
  • Character certificate from police would be mandatory for recruitment as teachers or other staff at educational institutions.

Socialist Pedro Sanchez took over as Spain's prime minister

  • Socialist Pedro Sanchez took over as Spain’s prime minister on June 1, 2018 after outgoing leader Mariano Rajoy lost a parliamentary confidence vote.
  • The no-confidence was triggered by a long-running corruption trial involving members of his centre-right People’s Party (PP), which led the Basque Nationalist Party withdraw the support.
  • Sanchez won the June 1 no-confidence motion with 180 votes in favour, 169 against and one abstention.
  • Socialist party head Sanchez becomes Spain’s seventh prime minister since its return to democracy in the late 1970s following the dictatorship of Francisco Franco.

Andhra Pradesh launched Zero Based Natural Farming Scheme

  • The Andhra Pradesh government on June 1, 2018 launched a Zero Based Natural Farming (ZBNF) scale-out scheme, aimed at benefitting around six million farmers by 2024.
  • The formal announcement of the scheme was made by Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu.
  • The state agriculture department also signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in this regard, with the Sustainable India Finance Facility (SIFF).
  • The MoU is for scaling up the ZBNF against investment worth Rs. 16,134 crores over the next six years.
  • SIFF is an initiative with the partnership of the United Nations Environment Program, the World Agroforestry Center, and the BNP Paribas.

US Pacific Command renamed as US Indo-Pacific Command

  • The United States (US) military renamed its Pacific Command (PACOM) to the US Indo-Pacific Command (INDOPACOM) in a symbolic move underscoring the growing importance of India to the Pentagon.
  • The US Pacific Command, which is responsible for all US military activity in the greater Pacific region, has about 375,000 civilian and military personnel assigned to its area of responsibility, which includes India.
  • In 2016, the US and India signed an agreement governing the use of each other's land, air and naval bases for repair and resupply, a step towards building defence ties as they seek to counter the growing maritime assertiveness of China.

M Venkatesh takes over as MD & CEO of MRPL

  • M Venkatesh on June 1, 2018 took over as the Managing Director & CEO (MD& CEO) of Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals (MRPL).
  • Venkatesh, 53, replaced H Kumar, who superannuated on May 31, 2018. He has been appointed for a five-year term which is extendable till his superannuation in January 2025.
  • MRPL is a subsidiary of state-owned Oil and Natural Gas Corp (ONGC). It is a schedule 'A' Miniratna, Central Public-Sector Enterprise (CPSE) under the Ministry of Petroleum.

China successfully launched Gaofen-6 satellite

  • China on June 2, 2018 successfully launched a new Earth observation satellite named Gaofen-6 satellite. It was launched from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Centre in northwest China.
  • The satellite launched aboard a Long March-2D rocket will be mainly used in agricultural resources research and disaster monitoring.
  • A scientific experiment satellite named Luojia-1 was sent into space at the same time. It was the 276th mission of the Long March rocket series.

Odisha launches Gopabandhu Sambadika Swasthya Bima Yojana

  • Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on May 31, 2018 launched "Gopabandhu Sambadika Swasthya Bima Yojana" for working journalists.
  • The health insurance scheme for working journalists will be implemented with effect from June 1, 2018.
  • In the first phase, as many as 3,233 working journalists from across the state will get health insurance coverage up to Rs 2 lakh.
  • At least five members of a journalist's family would be covered under the scheme and scribes will get their Health Insurance Card from the District Information and Public Relations Officer (DIPRO) in their respective districts.

US vetoes United Nations resolution on protecting Palestinians

  • The United States (US) vetoed on June 1, 2018 an Arab-backed UN draft resolution calling for measures to protect the Palestinians.
  • The Kuwait-drafted text had called for “measures to guarantee the safety and protection” of Palestinian civilians in Gaza and the occupied West Bank and requested a UN report to propose an “international protection mechanism.”
  • The outcome deepened the deadlock at the top UN body over how to respond to the flareup of violence in Gaza just days after UN envoy Nickolay Mladenov warned that the Palestinian enclave was “close to the brink of war.”
