Centre issues advisory against online game MOMO challenge

  • The Union Women and Child Development (WCD) Ministry issued an advisory on the deadly online game 'Momo challenge'.
  • The advisory asked parents to monitor social media activity of their children to ensure that they are not engaging in the "dangerous" game.
  • The ministry also listed signs that might indicate that a child is involved in the game. These include becoming withdrawn from friends and family, persistent low mood, visible marks such as deep cuts or wounds on any part of the body.
  • What is Momo challenge?
    • The 'Momo challenge' consists of a variety of self-harming dares which becomes increasingly risky as the game progresses and it finally ends with a suicide challenge.
    • It is alleged that the 'Momo Challenge' has claimed the lives of two persons in Kurseong in West Bengal's Darjeeling district -- Manish Sarki, 18, on August 20 and Aditi Goyal, 26.
    • The ‘Momo’ challenges is somewhat similar to another cyber game 'Blue Whale' which had surfaced in 2017 claiming a number of lives.

Remuneration of ASHA, Anganwadi workers hiked

  • Prime Minister Narendra Narendra Modi on September 11, 2018 announced an increase in remuneration of workers under Accredited Social Health Activist (ASHA) scheme and anganwadi scheme. The decision would be effective from October 2018.
  • The announcement was made by PM Modi during his video interaction with a team of three As – the ASHA worker, Anganwadi worker and ANM (Auxiliary Nurse Midwife) from across the country.
  • What else announced?
    • Doubling of routine incentives given by the Union Government to ASHA workers.
    • Free insurance cover to ASHA workers under Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana and Prime Minister Suraksha Bima Yojana.
    • Honorarium for anganwadi workers increased from Rs. 3000 to Rs 4,500 and from Rs. 2,200 to Rs 3,500.
    • Honorarium for anganwadi helpers has also been increased from Rs 1,500 to Rs 2,250.
    • Additional incentives for anganwadi workers using techniques such as Common Application Software (ICDS-CAS.) The incentives ranging from Rs. 250 to Rs. 500, would be based on performance.
  • About ASHA and Anganwadi workers
    • The Accredited social health activists (ASHAs) are community health workers instituted by the government of India's Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW).
    • They were instituted as a part of the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) launched in 2005.
    • Anganwadis were set up under the Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) programme launched in 1975.

First ever bus service between Bihar and Nepal flagged off

  • The Chief Minister of Bihar Nitish Kumar on September 11, 2018 flagged off the first bus service between Bihar and Nepal.
  • The service will link Bodh Gaya and Patna in Bihar to Kathmandu and Janakpur in Nepal strengthening the relations between India and Nepal.
  • The four buses plying under the services have been commissioned following the agreement between India and Nepal.
  • What is the Agreement?
    • India and Nepal have agreed to ply buses on eight new routes to improve connectivity between the two neighbours.
    • These include Patna-Janakpur, Kathmandu-Varanasi, Bodh Gaya-Kathmandu, Nepalganj-Delhi, Janakpur-Ayodhya, Delhi – Pokhra, Delhi – Mahendranagar and Siliguri – Kathmandu.
    • Currently five bus routes are operative. These are: Delhi to Kathmandu, Pokhra and Mahendranagar, Varanasi – Kathmandu and Janakpur – Ayodhya.

England wins Test series against India 4-1

  • England on September 11, 2018 defeated India by 118 runs on the final day of the fifth test match played at Oval to clinch the 5-match Test series 4-1.
  • India-England test series named ‘Pataudi Trophy’ was won by England for the third time since its inception in 2007.
  • Highlights of the Series
    • Player of the Match: Alastair Cook
    • Player of the Series: Sam Curran, Virat Kohli
    • James Anderson as he became the highest wicket taker in Test cricket among the fast bowlers. He surpassed Glenn McGrath's tally of 563 wickets taking the final wicket of the match.
    • Alastair Cook retired from all forms of cricket after scoring a century in the Oval Test. He is the highest run getter in Tests for England.
  • About Pataudi Trophy
    • The Pataudi Trophy is awarded to the winner of the England-India Test Cricket series held in England. The trophy itself was designed and made by Jocelyn Burton. It was first awarded in 2007 to commemorate the 75 years since the first Test match between the two sides.

    • 800 wickets: Muttiah Muralitharan, Sri Lanka
    • 708 wickets: Shane Warne, Australia
    • 619: Anil Kumble, India
    • 564: James Anderson, England
    • 563: Glenn McGrath, Australia

India's Junior shooters win first set of skeet medals at ISSF World Championships

  • India's Junior shooters on September 11, 2018 won the country's first set of skeet medals at the ISSF World Championships in Changwon, South Korea.
  • The Indian medal tally included a men's team silver and an individual bronze by Gurnihal Singh Garcha – the first Indian to win a Skeet medal at World Championships.
  • The trio of Gurnihal, Ananjeet Singh Naruka and Ayush Rudraraju combined for a score of 355 for a second-place finish in the finals.
  • This will be the first time that India skeet shooters will come back with medals from the premier competition.

Apsara – U Reactor Becomes Operational at Bhabha Atomic Research Centre

  • Apsara – U (Aprsara Upgraded) Reactor on September 10, 2018 became operational at Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), Trombay.
  • Apsara-U is a swimming pool type research reactor and the upgraded version of “Apsara” – the first research reactor in Asia – that came into existence in August 1956 and was shut down in 2009.
  • The reactor, made indigenously, uses plate type dispersion fuel elements made of Low Enriched Uranium (LEU). 
  • By virtue of higher neutron flux, this reactor will increase indigenous production or radio-isotopes for medical application by about fifty percent and would also be extensively used for research in nuclear physics, material science and radiation shielding.

YUDH ABHYAS 2018: Indo-US Joint Military Exercise

  • Armies of India and the United States (US) will carry out a military training exercise in the foothills of the Himalayas at Chaubattia from September 16, 2018. It will conclude on September 29, 2018.
  • Codenamed ‘Yudh Abhyas 2018’, it is the 14th edition of the joint military exercise hosted alternately by India and the US.
  • The two-week exercise will witness participation of about 350 personnel of the US Army and similar strength of Garud Division of the Indian Army.

VC11184: India’s first missile tracking ship readying for sea trials

  • Hindustan Shipyard Limited (HSL) is gearing up to undertake sea trials of India’s first missile tracking ship referred to as ‘VC 11184’ by the first week of October 2018.
  • The keel of the ship, which was laid on June 30, 2014, is being built for the National Technical Research Organisation (NTRO).
  • The NTRO is the technical intelligence agency working directly under the supervision of the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) and the National Security Adviser (NSA).
  • It is considered a “topmost secret project” which is being pursued at a cost of about Rs 750 crore. It will be named after its induction into the Indian Navy.

Samsung opens its largest experience store in Bengaluru

  • The Samsung Electronics on September 11, 2018 opened the world’s largest mobile experience centre at the ‘Opera House’ on Brigade Road in Bengaluru. The iconic building will now be known as ‘Samsung Opera House’.
  • The centre will now showcase experiences revolving around Artificial Intelligence and Internet of Things. It will bring together technology, lifestyle and innovation to offer people unique experiences.
  • The facility aims at becoming the hub for events organized around fitness, gaming, music, movies, food, stand-up comedy and startups.
  • The facility will also have a fully functional customer service centre and is equipped with high-speed public Wi-Fi.
  • Earlier in July 2018, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and South Korean President Moon Jae-in had inaugurated Samsung's expanded factory in Noida Sector 81 billed as the world’s largest mobile factory.

Draft Charter of Patients’ Rights released

  • The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on September 11, 2018 released the draft Charter of Patients’ Right prepared by the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC).
  • The draft charter, which includes 17 rights with descriptions, draws upon all relevant provisions, inspired by international charters and guided by national-level provisions.
  • Under the charter, patients will not just have the right to emergency medical care and informed consent, but will also have the rights to non-discrimination, seek a second opinion, and choose alternative treatment options, if available.
  • The Health ministry plans to implement the charter through State governments for provision of proper healthcare by clinical establishments.
