Kaptan Singh Solanki appointed gets additional charge of Himachal Pradesh

  • Haryana Governor Kaptan Singh Solanki was given the additional charge of Himachal Pradesh by President Ram Nath Kovind.
  • It is decided in the absence of Himachal Governor Acharya Devvrat, who is on leave.
  • Background:
  • Article 153 it was inserted by 7th constitutional ammendment, 1956 according to which -  ‘A person can be appointed as the governor of two or more states. 

Proposal for construction of break water harbour in Konkan

  • The Nivati-Medha break water harbour in the Konkan region of Maharashtra is being considered under “12 Champion Sectors initiative” of the Ministry of Commerce.
  • The was informed by Union Minister of Commerce and Industry and Civil Aviation. The Minister informed him that a proposal has already been submitted to the Maharashtra Maritime Board in this regard.
  • Suresh Prabhu directed concerned officials to expedite the construction of the breakwater harbour once the Maharashtra Maritime Board approves the proposal.
  • In the absence of such a harbour the financial condition of fishermen in the area is deteriorating as they are totally dependent on the vagaries of the sea.
  • Building of the breakwater harbour will help the fishermen to haul a better catch even in adverse conditions and also give a boost to the tourism industry by allowing cruise ships to dock at the harbour.
  • Other tourism activities will also get a fillip. This will raise the living standards of local people in the area.
  • Background:
  • Breakwaters are structures constructed on coasts as part of coastal management or to protect an anchorage from the effects of both weather and long shore drift.


DGNCC Flags-in NCC Boys Expedition team to Mt Saifee

  • Director General of National Cadet Corps (DGNCC) Lt Gen PP Malhotra flagged-in the NCC Boys Expedition to Mt Saifee on 11 July 2018.He congratulated the boy cadets and the support staff for their splendid effort and demonstration of grit and courage to overcome the challenges of rugged terrain and hostile weather conditions in their bid to summit the peak.
  • The expedition was launched on 01 June 2018.
  • All the cadets were given mountaineering training in NIM, Uttarkashi for 10 days.
  • The Expedition Leader Col Dhirendra Singh shared his experience and the challenges faced by the expedition team during their difficult attempt.
  • Mt Saifee is situated in the beautiful Gangotri National Park and the Garhwal Himalayas.The peak is knows as Mountaineers Paradise.


INS Tarangini Visits Sunderland to Participate in Tall Ship Races – 2018


  • INS Tarangini arrived at her seventh port, Sunderland in the UK, during her #Lokayan-18 voyage and also to participate in the prestigious ‘tall ship races - 2018’.
  • The ship is part of the first Training Squadron based at Kochi, under the Southern Naval Command of the Indian Navy.
  • The name ‘Tarangini’ is derived from the Hindi word ‘Tarang’ meaning waves; thus, Tarangini means ‘the one that rides the waves’.
  • INS Tarangini is the first ship of the #Indian Navy to have circumnavigated the globe in the year 2003-04 and has participated in tall ship races conducted around the world in 2007, 2011 and 2015.
  • Lokayan is a combination of two Sanskrit words: ‘Lokya’ meaning worldwide and ‘Yana’ meaning travel, thus literally meaning, ‘travel around the world’.  
  • INS Tarangini commenced ‘Lokayan-18’ on 10 Apr 18 from Kochi, India and is set to cover a distance of over 20,000 nautical miles, with a crew of nine officers, 30 officer sea trainees and 43 sailors.

Swachh Survekshan Grameen 2018 launched

  • The Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation launched a rural cleanliness programme, the 'Swachh Survekshan Grameen 2018', to rank all states and districts on the basis of qualitative and quantitative evaluation.
  • The Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation (MDWS) has commissioned the survey on rural cleanliness and this ranking will be based on district-level surveys of public places like schools, anganwadis, haat-bazaars, panchayats and citizen's perception of Swachhta.
  • The programme plans to survey 6,800 villages in 680 districts across the country. It also plans to cover 34,000 public places in the villages.
  • According to the ministry, to take feedback from citizens on the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, around 55,000 citizens would be interviewed and their views on sanitation issues would be taken.
  • According to ministry officials, the information would be obtained from its Integrated Management Information System (IMIS).


Century’s Longest Total Lunar Eclipse on July 27-28

  • A total lunar eclipse will occur on July 27-28 with a totality duration of 1 hour 43 minutes, the longest in this century.
  • The total eclipse will last up to 2.43 hours. Then the Moon will start to gradually come out of Earth's shadow and partial eclipse will end at 3:49 am IST on July 28.
  • In this particular eclipse, the Moon will pass through the central part of the Earth's umbral shadow. Furthermore, the Moon will be at apogee, the farthest from the Earth in its orbit, on July 27 and will be moving at a slower speed in its orbit.
  • This slower moving full Moon will take longer time and greater distance of Earth's umbral shadow cone to travel.
  • Such long duration of total lunar eclipses had earlier occurred on July 16, 2000 for totality duration of 1 hour 46 minutes and another one on June 15, 2011 for totality duration of 1 hour 40 minutes.
  • On July 27, the red planet Mars, will also be at opposition, meaning that the Sun and Mars will lie opposite to each other, with the Earth in the middle.
  • Mars opposition that had occurred in August 2003 brought the two planets at the closest distance in approximately 60,000 years. The approach of Mars on July 31 will bring the two planets closest and the planet Mars to be seen brightest since 2003.

  • A lunar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes directly behind Earth and into its shadow. This can occur only when the Sun, Earth, and the Moon are aligned (in syzygy) exactly or very closely so, with the planet in between


S-400 Triumf missile deal with Russia will go ahead despite US sanctions


  • Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has said the S-400 Triumf air defence missile deal with Russia will go ahead despite the US sanctions on military transactions with Moscow.
  • The Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act, under which the Trump administration has imposed sanctions on military deals with Russia.
  • The US had announced sanctions against Russia under the stringent law for its alleged meddling in the American presidential election in 2016.
  • India wants to procure the long-range missile systems to tighten its air defence mechanism, particularly along the nearly 4,000-km-long Sino-India border.
  • Background:
  • The S-400 Triumf,previously known as the S-300PMU-3, is an anti-aircraft weapon system developed in the 1990s by Russia's Almaz Central Design Bureau as an upgrade of the S-300 family.It is a Mobile surface-to-air missile system.


Railways launched its first consolidated Bridge Management System

  • The Railways has launched its first consolidated Bridge Management System, a web-enabled IT application to store data on its one lakh 50 thousand bridges.
  • Railways Minister Piyush Goyal launched the service in New Delhi for meaningful assimilation, analysis and dissemination of information related to various activities about its bridges.
  • Mr Goyal also distributed awards to the Station Beautification competition. Balharshah and Chandrapur railway stations in Maharashtra from the Central Railway were awarded the first prize while Madhubani station of the East Central Railway and Madurai station of Southern Railway were the co-winners of the second prize.
