FIFA World Cup 2018 begins in Russia

  • 21st Edition of FIFA World Cup 2018 started on June 14, 2018 in Russia and the final will take place at the 81,000-capacity Luzhniki Stadium on July 15, 2018.
  • First Match will be played between Russia and Saudi Arabia at Moscow's Luzhniki Stadium.
  • The 32-day tournament will feature 32 teams and 64 games. World Cup 2018 will be played out in 12 stadiums across 11 cities in Russia.
  • This is the first time Russia is hosting the event and also it is for the first time that the gala event is being held in Eastern Europe.
  • Mascot is Wolf named Zabivaka and Official Song is Live it Up.

North Eastern Council (NEC) Repositioned

  • The Union cabinet approved repositioning of the North Eastern Council (NEC) making the Union Home Minister as the ex-officio chairman of the council and Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) minister as the Vice-Chairman.
  • Earlier North Eastern Region (DoNER) minister was the Chairman of the Region.
  • The council, a statutory body with governors and chief ministers of all the eight north eastern states as its member was set up under the North Eastern Council Act, 1971 as an apex level body.
  • It was constituted for securing balanced and coordinated development and facilitating coordination with the states.
  • It would also provide a forum for discussing inter-state matters more comprehensively and also consider common approaches to be taken in future.

HDFC bank gets nod for Rs 24000 crore FDI

  • The Union cabinet headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved the proposal for grant of permission to HDFC Bank to raise additional share capital.
  • It will be a maximum of Rs. 24,000 crore, including premium, over and above the previous approved limit of Rs. 10,000 crore.
  • It should be such that the composite foreign shareholding in the Bank shall not exceed 74% of the enhanced paid-up equity share capital of the bank.
  • The decision would ensure that the composite foreign shareholding in the bank inclusive of all types of foreign investments, both direct and indirect, will not exceed 74 per cent of the enhanced paid-up equity share capital of the bank.

BEL’s first overseas representative office inaugurated in Vietnam

  • Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman inaugurated the first Representative Office of Defence public sector, Bharat Electronics Ltd (BEL), in Vietnam.
  • Sitharaman handed over the symbolic key of BEL’s representative office in Vietnam (VIRO) to Gowtama M V, Chairman and Managing Director, BEL.
  • The Capital of Vietnam is Hanoi and Currency is Vietnamese dong.

Accelerated Plan for Elimination of Lymphatic Filariasis (LF) 2018 for India released

  • J P Nadda, Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare released the Accelerated Plan for Elimination of Lymphatic Filariasis (LF) 2018 for India.
  • It was released following the inauguration of the 10th meeting of Global Alliance to Eliminate Lymphatic Filariasis (GAELF) in New Delhi.
  • The Plan seeks to make the country free of the mosquito-borne parasitic infection by 2020. India accounts for 40 percent of the infection caused by roundworms worldwide.
  • Besides, under the APELF, strategies like the Triple Drug Therapy or IDA [Ivermectin, diethylcarbamazine (DEC) and Albendazole], community engagement for successful MDA implementation and use of DEC-medicated salt, house-to-house visit advocacy, will be deployed to strengthen the LF elimination efforts.
  • GAELF is an alliance of partners from 72 LF endemic national country programmes, NGOs and private sectors among others to assist in WHO's Global Programme for eliminating Lymphatic Filariasis.
  • Lymphatic filariasis, also known as elephantiasis, is a human disease caused by parasitic worms known as filarial worms. The worms are spread by the bites of infected mosquitoes.

Solar Charkha Mission to be launched in 50 clusters

  • The Solar Charkha Mission of the Ministry of Micro Small & Medium Enterprises (MSME), will be launched by the President, Ram Nath Kovind on June 27, 2018 in New Delhi.
  • The Mission will cover 50 clusters and every cluster will employ 400 to 2000 artisans.
  • The Mission has been approved by the Government of India and will disburse subsidy of Rs. 550 crore to the artisans.
  • The Minister further informed that 15 new state-of-the-art technology centers are being set up all over the country including North-East. Each center is being built at a cost of around Rs. 150 crore.
  • To promote employment among poverty-struck people living in rural and semi-urban areas of India, Bhartiya Harit Khadi Gramodaya Sansthan came up with a unique model through Khadi Solar Charkha project.
  • Manufacturing khadi organically be it from cotton fibre or other eco-friendly and locally available resources like banana leaves or milk.

NITI Aayog launches Composite Water Management Index

  • NITI Aayog has come up with the Composite Water Management Index as a useful tool to assess and improve the performance in efficient management of water resources.
  • This index is an attempt to inspire States and UTs towards efficient and optimal utilization of water, and recycling thereof with a sense of urgency.
  • In view of limitations on availability of water resources and rising demand for water, sustainable management of water resources has acquired critical importance.
  • The index can be utilised to formulate and implement suitable strategies for better management of water resources. It has been finalized after an elaborate exercise including seeking feedback from the States and consultation with reputed experts.

Prime Minister dedicated modernized Bhilai Steel Plant to the nation

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi dedicated to the nation the modernised and expanded plant of state-run steel maker SAIL at Bhilai.
  • Other projects inaugurated by PM Modi
  • Integrated Command and Control Centre set up at Naya Raipur in Chhattisgarh
  • Foundation stone for the new building of IIT Bhilai
  • Launched the second phase of Bharat Net project for gram panchayat connectivity
  • Air services between Raipur and Jagdalpur under UDAAN Scheme
  • Bhilai is Steel Authority of India Ltd's (SAIL) largest plant and major producer and supplier of rails for Indian Railways including 260 metre long rails.
  • This would be the third plant of SAIL which the prime minister will dedicate to the nation. In 2015, Prime Minister had dedicated Rourkela and IISCO steel plants.

Centre approves raising of two women Battalions for J&K Police

  • The Centre has approved raising of two women Battalions for Jammu and Kashmir Police to enhance the representation of women in the State Police.
  • One battalion each will be raised for Jammu region and Kashmir region. Sixty percent of posts will be kept reserved for women of 10 border districts namely, Jammu, Samba, Kathua, Poonch, Rajouri, Baramulla, Bandipora, Kupwara, Kargil and Leh.
  • The recruitment process will be completed by the State government within one year. This will provide direct employment to over two thousand deserving women in the State.
